G. .11. MCMAsTEIR.
Of the above cominunidaitibn we
have to say:
I.- The 'ditor of the Mercantile JoUr
nal who is addressed is not the strang
or to South Carolina that our corres
pondent supposes. On the contrary,
his acquaimtice with the State for the
past fteen years has been both person
and'intiiate; lie has larger interests
theie'than the great majority of the
native born.
2. We entirely agree with G. 11.
MCM. that the pe)ople of that St atei And
and of the whole Souith, douild find no
better country. They need only fol
io out the deferinination expressed
to live there and improve their re
sources, always welconiins help,- and
tre(ting justly both their own pcople
and those who come among them. So
an unexampled- prosperity is before
the South now that "the blight of slav
di-y ia forever removed?"
3. In- regard to the ,ebsu', what is
claimed is that there, is something
wrong. Either the census takers of'
8'0or those f 1880 havegone very
such percentage-of increase as the two
sets of figunrea l'eprdLent.' Which is
wrong, and how it happened, are'riiowv
the questiohs to 'be investigated . iThe
country asks a fair investigation, and
feels sure we shall have it at the hands
of Genieral W'alkijr and' the Census liu
rean.
4. Our correspohd'e,it's hit at the
small fhmilies oif New England is just.
