fendant,pleaded guilty of forging an
order for five dollars upon J. E. John.
Ston1 & Co., and was sentenlced' t the
penitentiary at hard labor for th6 term .
of one year, and to pay a fine of one dol- O
lar. The next was the case of the State to:
vs. Abram Owens, indicted for assault
and battery with intent to kilL The
defendant was represented by Mr.
A. M. Mackey.' The evideice was'
purely circumstantial, but of so strong at
a character that the jury found a ver- tiol
dibt of guilty, -after being out one hour. no
The prisoner was sentenced to the
Fenitentiary at hard labor fdr the term
of three years. After sentbncing the
prisoners on Tuesday morning, Judge I
Hudso, was occupied the rest of the 6r
day Nylth such brsiness af could be olit
transacte'd at: chambers. The juries
were all discharged on Monday eve
ning-tthe grand jury for the term, and
the petit juries until next Monday ~
at 10 a.'m. m. This was made necessary
by the fact that Judge Hudson would
be engaged in hearing tile case rela
tive to the Chief Justiceship, in Coluin
bia, to-day. Judge Hudson was es- I
peclally commissioned by Governor
Jeter to sit as one of the Associate k
Justices of the Sfipr6a Court, for the Th
trial of tle tause; and hence most of an
the business hi the Court of Common
Plcas will have to remain over until
next week when the Judge will return.
Wedinesday the Court of Common
