too late, however, to back out' so we
made up our inids to stand ohr
ground and see the thing through, let
come what would. After a niglit's rest
on the river, with scarcely a respecta

hours, we were escorted on Thursday
morning to the hospitab1p resid9nc0,9f
Mr. Beln Aurlitry, a idile dr so fIm
the river, and( were welcomed by that
open-hearted old gentleman and made
t' feel at once tiit we were amongst
friends. In due course of time break
fiat was almou.lwed, the rustling of
dresses and the soft tripping of dainty
fet meanwhile c:using our hearts to
fiutter sonewhat, the fitne of the
young ladies of the household having
reacled our ears long efdre. Thie
terrible ordeal wits safely gone
tirougi, a id we wei-e cre long restored
toour normal condition. About let
o'clack in the morning we returned to
the river bank, accoipanied by the
ladies,and the usual incidentsof thepic
nic followed: blaying caids; discussing
the fasllo,ii talking over the local gos
sip and last, but iot least, indulghi in
a little innoceht flirtation. But those
who quote poetry and give themselves
up to romancing tre after all human
beings, and generally have 'apptites.
And it frequent,ly happens that they
get hungry about one o'clock p. in., as
was the ease on this occasion, so that
whein dinner was annomced there
was no straggling, but a prompt re
sponseto the summons not only by
the young men and maidens, but like
wise by the old folks. A bountiful
st6v ud frk; vith a few trimiings,
was set before us., and disappeared in
a short time, enjoyed to the fullest ex
tent by all of us, and commending
still more to our favorable considera
tion this celebrated river "dish." But
the time was drawing near when your
correspondent and. his faithful ally
Wonld have to bid good-bye to their
Newberry friends, although we con
tiemplatel our departure with regret.
NdtwitllatAuding the fact that we met
our hosts as entire strangers, so warm
had been our welcome and so hospi
table our treatment that we felt we
wvere partinig froarol friends, and we
loft them with grateful recollections of
our brief sojourn amongst them. Once
more we are stemminug the swift cur
rent of the Broad, and again find our
selves on the soil of old Fairfield,
wvho we propose xpaking but a short
stop)pagg b)efo'e turning o'e faces,
hethiewards wvhere await us thmosee who
arc nearer and dearer to us than all the
