A Ball In Vienna. One of the most brilliant evenings of the season in Vienai was certainly the "U'schlnas ball,'' an exclusively Viennest fete. The word l.'schns exists in the Vienmese' dialect only, and means some thing unreal, something which In appear ance 1s worth looking at, while in realily it is but rubbish. The subject chosen for this ball was the 'Tower of Babel," and everything-the ro,"': the decorations, the costumes, the sep'irate groups-fitted the subject. The ol I lebrews, Assyriuns, Egyptians, Pho"nicians, were tb be repre se'ted, and yet not a single jewel or trinket, not a single yard of costly material could be used for this purpose-all must bc G'schnas. I will give you an Idea how this plan was carried out by describing the entrance hall. The walls are dceorated with frescoes on cardboard, painted( by ou fiist artists, who are the chief nariagers of this ball. Of course, all the paintings arc in the old Egyptian style. In the center sit two colossal idols, made after the pat tern of those 'eeupying.one of the halls in the Bri ish Museum. At first these seem to have been gottenll up at an enormon cost; every detail of them satislies the eye. But when you draw neu'er you can see that nothing save an artist's fancy and at artist's handi could have produced so muel effect with such slight means. Everything that appears to be gold is simply straw, The giant's hair, rolled in great rows o stiff Assyrian curls, was mladie of a bundh of Virginia cigars, his ear-rings were cool keys, his heactress was a vegetable baske studued with breakfast rolls, and so fort h. High in the air we see the gardens o deniramts hanging from the ceiling b) ropes, yet in which you mlay take a wtll at your leisure. On close inslectlon thes gardens are found to consist of broom. sticks, potatoes, bliakigh-bo's, woodeti ladles, lamp curtains, babies' tritnnplet 21an2 paper cuttings, and yet the lffect is won. druus. If wte add a fey, articles more such as rolls, fruit, blankets, dried f-ruit oranges, apples, straw nats, horsehair, flax, skins, we have the whole of the mate rials used for producing the linest falry pahice ever seen. This ball is amost populhu with the artists because they are accns. toied to making the mlost of every chance and because tbey are endowed with mor< fancy and better eyes than other mortals Those who like spending large stims upou thejr dress and making themselves coi spicuous by extravagance always grov (tespel1te when this ball approaches, Io here the best idea has the greatest success ''hus the great actress Wolter appeared it notiing but. two white sheets, laid h1 Grecian folds, sewn together and joined 01 either shoulder by a buckle, whticha wa nothing but a horse's bridle-hit. Alakar hiuselt appeared as' "D)avid," the sleplhen boy, but he looked like a' sultan, m rounded as he was by all the finest wonute of the capital. ''here were seveal IJewwl high 1.ri.sts, whose baeast-plates werc btautitully represented by color boxes The beards aid hair of the old Assyrialn aid Egypt, ians were represented in cigar Or sntll sausages. It A young commercial traveler, represent- 11 lng a large mercantile house, Detroit, was i told by an old hand at the business that. his it firm furn.shed him with his clothing. The young man thought ho would try it, and in t: his next expense account brought in a mod. est item for "one'pair of shoes." His employ *er refused to allow it. He informed his .adviser and tutor of his failure, and the latter laughed at him for his freshness. i "You must learn book-keeping by double entry," said he. After the next tip the young man's employer noticed that his om n'.bus fare and hack hire was larger.than at any previous time, and called his attention i to it. To which the young man replied '1 that he had rrdden a good deal, because i walking wore out his shoes. ills employ. li or could imt deny that, but when he found that the young man was more and more ii addicted both to riding and to new clothes, i he began to suspect something, and said to y him that his health was evidently getting t1 delicate, and lie must either take more ex ercise on foot or take his walking papers. ii From that time on his bills were more I moderate, andi he has h'een in a perpetual t quandary since, how the other fellow man- ( aged it. The extraordinary courage of the Albani an women has been displayed over again in the history of the country; but one of the nost celebrated instances was that re corded of the branch of the Albanian peo ple represented .by the Suliotes, when they were besieged by All Pasha In 1792. The Suliotes formed a semni-independent confed eracy, comprising sixty-six villages; in the dlistricts of Margariti, Paramythia and Jan- ! inn. 'Up to the time of Ali Pasha they prided themselves on the regularity of the payments of their dues to the porte. But the intrigues of the cunning old Veil, who wanted to get the whole of the spahilik of Suli into his greedy banids, soon roused the people into reb, ellion, and they commenced their glorious and lengthiened war against the far greater resources of the renowned Psa. Thme latter, by means of the dlupli city of which he was umchi a cermonious master, had enitrapy'ed Tzavella, one of the Stihiote headsa of houses, into his power, andl then laidl sicae to the town of Suli. lIe endleavoredl by b,ribmes to indunce Tzavella to turn traiter. Cunning here met its match; the crafty Suhmote pretended conlip)hnce, and even left his own son Foto in All Pausha's hands as a hostage. Hie returned to Suli under pretense of betraying the town, but no sooner hia'd he arrived than lie sent a letter of 'defiance to the Pasha. Ali assailed the town, and it was here that the heroism of tihe Albaniani women became so conspihcuous. Mosko, the wife of Tza vella and mother of Foto, showed prodi. gles of valor during the siege. She broke a open some cartridlge-hoxes with a hatchet, and then loadled them on the other women, I and1 rushing into the trenches, distributed them among the Suiliotes. All threatened to roast alive her son Foto, but she replied II that she was young and could have other "" children, and that she would eat a b,it of. the roasted flesh of her son rather thanm be- a tray' her country. .
