I:i Winnsboro Judge A. C. Haskell, the
President of the Charlotte, Columbia
and Augusta Railroad Company, who
was here looking after some matters in
connection with the Road. The Judge
is now well in harness in his niew p0
sition, and is making an able ofilcial.
The Company Is certainly fortunate in
having as its head a gentleman of in
Ielllgence, character and enlightened
views,. We have no0 doubt that 11e wil

regret. to anlnounace .the~ (dathl of Mr.
Tr. D). Oxner, which occurred at a late
lionur on Tihursday aft1ernoon, after a
palinful illness of three weeks. Mr.
Ox ner had been in rathier feeble health
for some time past, and this fact, comn
buned with his old age, rendered him I
the less able to withstand the attacks
of his malady. I~o was at the time of
his death ini tile seventieth year of lisa
age. Mr. Oxner came to Winnsboro
about thirty years ago, entering into
mercantile business with Mr. J. M.
Leventritt, now of New York. After
tile war the deceased was . in business
for a short time on his own account,
and in 1868 wvas appointed postmaster
at Wlnnsboro. The duties of this po..
sition lie discharged throughout wvith
conspicuous fidelity and thoroughness.
In fact, In his entIre life he sustained
the highest character for integrity and
conscientions deiotion to duty. In
his death he leaves a name of which
hiss descendants may wvell be proud.

proaching completion. It is not yet
knovn who-is to be tenoher. There is
somec clanor for a male teacher. To
find i competent mian who is willing
to (o the work for "the money that is
in it" is the next'ihing to be done. It
is believed, however, that a good
school could be built up here if sone
energetic, competont man would take
hold of it.
Blackstock has been making sonic
improvement in the way of phlnting
shade trees, which have long beeii
needed. The intendant and wardenw
deserve and should receive the ivel
done of all the citizens for their effortk
in this line.

At the recent drawing of grand and
petit jurors for the April term of the
United States Circuit Court, the names
of the following gentlemen of thif
county were drawn: J. A. Grigsby,
on the grand jury ; S. B. Lumpkin,
James Turier and W. M. Young o1
the petit jury. The next term will be
held at Charleston commencing on the
first Monday in April.
The northern bound fneight train
was delayed for several hours at this
place on Wednesday-caused by the
tender Jumplig the track in shifting
frorn the main to the side track.
There was all unusual quantity of

sold ata. very fair price for this season
of the year. The greatest part of tie

ready sold; but sonme of the farmers,
who could afford to do so, have held
their cotton back from market, anld

The recent cold snapt of weather has
perhaps been beneficial In freezing out

grali. We have seen thousands of
