SCIENTIFIC AboUnizcd Furniture.-Chamber furni ture niade of ebonized wood, iI Wmita tion of the rich ebony and gold more common In the Eastern llemisphecre, Is quite popular, and there are few tine furnituro stores Itn thle cly i Which more or- less of It Is not displayed. Some superb spelcimeIs are to be seen at the dealers', where they attract muich at tef4tion. The process ofebonizing wood Is colparatively simple, and hats beena described as follows: Tie wood 1s first stained with a decoction of logwood, which may be purchased froma any druggist or dealer in dye stuffs. It Is dissolved in warm water until all laus been taken tp that-the water will hold. Application to the'woou Is made ready with a large, soft bristle brush, and the surface is rubbed with a cloth to pre. Vent the formation of a gummy coat thereou. After the article has been left to dry for a few hours the second appil cation, which conivsts of vinegar in which a quantity of nails or clean fIl ings have been soaked for se veral days, Is also freely laid on with a brush. The moment the vinegar touches the wood It combines with the logwood so lution in the pores, making ai ink which is a permanent jot black stair.. ''lhe influence of the iron fin the vinegar 18 all important, and it is relily that which does the work. If any tendency to grayness is noticed a second treat ment with the logwood and vinegar is necessary, but this seldom happens if the materials have been properly u(sed in the first instance. When perfecdy dry, the article is varnIshed and rubbed down, or fluished with furniture oil well rubbed in. A dead black surface is what ia sought after Cherry is coi sidered the best wood for eboizing, and the firnittate to whiCh1 we have re ftrreid Is most, generally known t . the trade as ebonized cherry. Whilte wood, liaple and beech are, however, used with good eit'eet. Any close grailed, dense wood will ansiwer. Ash, chest nut and oak are not suitable. b1 uiation:s of' anmmonia aId borax have been suggested inl Paris for rondering textile f'labrics I t fliina ble. New York. A Legal Decision. ihe following anecdoto Illustrating the legal subtletyof Hindoo, is told by Dr. Scuddor, of Brooklyn, formerly a mission ary in India. Four men, partners in busi nees, bought sone cotton bales. That the rats might not destroy the cotton, they purchased a cat. Thoy agreed that each of the four should own a particular log of the cat, and each adorned with beads and other ornaments the leg thus apportioned to him. ' he cat, by accident, injured one of its legs. The owner of that member wound around it a rag soaked in oil. The cat, go ing too near the licarth, set this rag on fire, and being in great pain, rushd in among the cotton bales where she was accustomed to hunt rat. The cotton thereby took fire and wias burned il). It was a total loss. 'Thie three other part.ncrs brought a suit to recover the value of the cotton, against the partner who owned this particular leg of the cat. The judge examined the case anid decided thus. The leg that had time oiled rag on it was hurt ; the cat could not use that leg-in fact, it heild kip the leg, and ran with the other three legs. The three un hurt legs, therofore, carried the fire to the cotton, and alone are culpable. The three partners who owied the three letis with which the cat ran to the cotton will pay the whole value of the bales to the partner who was the proprietor of the injured leg. toisuinition cured.
