It is reportedl that Mr. Clark, of Bal tiiore, a civil engincer and bridge 1)uider of considerable experience, -will be superintendent of the Char lotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad Compaiy, ill tile pilace of Mr. Theo dlore Kine, recently resigned. On Friday last, Mr. John L. Cam cron hauled in from his lpjace, near 'White Oak, four four-horse wagon loads of corn, and five 'wagon loads of ifodder, which he sold in Winnsboro. This is a more striking evidence of prosperity even than the loads of cot toln that come rolling in. At the close of Professor R. F. Martin's singing school at Jack sol's Creek Church, the pupils f'oried a singing club, to meet onie night in each week for practice, and if what we heard, saw and tasted, at thie lospitable house of Mr. IraIIeus Pope is a specimet of their general ncetiimgs, we are sIre "it is well to ieet with them." We were at the fair in Columiia, and among tile noted personages we saw there was tile Senior of Tm NEWS AND iIEnAM, nd lie wits haidling his avoirdupois to perfec tion. As we know lie saw all that any live man could see, we will wait to hear from him. I think Mr. B. F. Corley's nugges tion inl regard to orgainizing a Teach ers' Institute a good one. It should receive a second from every teacher in the county.. Mahy of uts ire young In experience, and the benefits derived from such imeetings, where men of long and successful experience inl teaching could be heard, would be of incalculable service. I suggest that wec hear from Mr. It. M. Davis on this subject. "Spivens," of Sirothers Depot, writing to the Home and Farm, Lou isville, Ky., says some good things about old Fairfield coutnty, and gives the youlng planters full credit for their energy and intelligence, but advises thenm to go West, and goes on to say, "If p)roper inducements wereo offeved they wvould go, and1( with such bone and siniew the West would soon bc come the favored of the States." lie does not think -eniough such young m1101 read the Home and Farm. Now wve tlhink if "S pivens" would go West anid stay, say flve years, and comne back, and prove to thecse young pianlt etrs, by plersonlal experience, that tihe West is the "Een" of the United States for the poor muan, lils advice would be well timed. Without this It in like all the other "Big Advertise nments" thund in railroad anid hotel offices. I have no0 doubt but "Spivens" is conIscienutious In his views, but we think ho is mistaken. Fairfield coun ty has plenty of good arable land to employ every young mant in it, and it requires much less capital to start here than it does to go *West and begin all over; and we have no doubt there ar~e plenty of energetic younig men who wvent West from South Carolina who wvould to-day give all they have to be near enough to their old homes to hear one of Garrison's beeves low, or the mule that went to Columbia bray, We suggest that we all remain here and give old South Carolina the bone and sinew that belongs to her, and make her what she was in anpte-bellum diays-secondr to none.
