Slomr, Jr., who rep resented Solicitor Gaston in the ha beas corpus case before Judge Mackey in Columbia, made a strong argullellt. Colonel Sloan is a very successVil law yer, a fiaet due both to the native abili ty and tile zeal he displays in tile Con duct of all matters entrusted to his viare. We are pleased to see f'oim our correspondence that the Graded School at Feasterville has already begun. Mr. Busby, the principal, has been sne cessfully engaged in teaching for several years, laving been lately in charge of Bethel Academy near Po maria. The example of Feasterville and Monticello will raise a spirit of imitation in other parts of the county. 8000 yards Calico at live and threc quarter centsa yasrd atD. Their stock has been carefully selected with a view to the vants of this particular mar ket, and will be found to contain cverything usually found in a well managedl establishment. Messrs. RAUnOAD NorEs.-The Charlotte Observer says: Tile superintendentof the Charlotte' Columbla & Angusta Railroad to sue. coed Capt. Klhine has not yet been nlamed, but it is presumned that lie will be aln officer of the Richlmond & ,Dan.. ville Railroad. The Riichmnond- & Danville and Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Rail road are- both hlaullig cottoni on flats niow, on account of iniability to suly tile box cars, and the nlext thing will be the burning of a whole train lop d. The term "a car load" has come to be about as inldefinite as to quantity as tile phrase "big as a piece of 011111k." Formerly a car load meant tenl tonis; now it means anlywher'e from tell to fifteenl tonis, andc hlas become useless anld deceptive as cycn an1 inldication of wveight . TheO Southiwesterni RailIway Association has, thlerefore, agreed that hereafter all frolghlt, excellt live stock, sha~ll lbe rated p or -100 pounds - istead of per car lead. At the next mooetinlg of the Southern Railway and Steamship Association to be held in Atlanta, on1 the 16th of Do colmber, a difficulty between general freight agents of slhrt lilnes and gen eral freight agenlte of lollg lines will be referred to the association, and,f po'ssiblo, adjusted.. If all tile roads agree to rate all freight, except live stock; by the hun dred poulnds, what is to become of those elaborate measuring sticks? Two fiat ears, loaded with cotton, one hlavinig fifty bales, stood at the (depot on tihe day of the lire. The The's story may be a little better than our own and we think it is. But the Times was not swayed by that sameo strict regard for truth lthat actuated us. .lowever that may.be, we copy what the Thmes has to say about it.. That tie Times is a paper of discern mnent is evident by its appreciation of tihe flct that we, like all great newr-! papers, have a double-barreled name. it has got our geography wrolig, but no matter. IHere is wv'hat tMe Tie says: "There is a newspaper in (lie town of Winnsboro, il thie State of North Carolina, called Tinsw sA> Iisut,1. A meeting had been held, and resolut tions adopted to petition the nlext Legislature to grant a supplementary tax, suflicient to ri the school teni months annually aiid to make the tuition free, over an area of six miles square with the school house as its centre. Prof. D. I. Busby, whom I have long and uniformly known as an educator of the highest, rank, had been securcd, and was then engaged as teacher. Other steps in the right di rection are contemplated. The whole educational outlook Was certainly cheering. ecasterville should be, anl I don't dloubt, wih the granting of its petition, wvill soon becomi ,the seat of a highly prosperous school. A better education I consider almost our only hope. Thme above-mentioned act io'n is, therefore, respect fully coinuded to the notice of other places that have been likewise 'suflbrinig educationally. G'. TIl1E L08 0.1. T1uB CHAMPION. A Chaorleton Steamer Collidegannd sIinks in Fourteen Fathoms of waiter-Tiriy Lives, Lost. Thl e steamship Ch/amp ion, Capt. .R1 W. Lockwood, of thie Newv York and Charleston hine, collided with an iron British ship, the Ladi/y Octaria, at three o'clock on Friday. -morning last at the entrance to Delaware Bay, ant immediately sank, carrying with her thirty of the passengers aund crew. T1hme necounts are that the voyage for the fist tenm hours w as uneventful. Thie passengers, among whomi were Mrs. Col. A.. 0. Andrew's, of Charleston, her (laughter, Miss Mikell, and Mr. J. L. Marvin, of Columbia, retired to their b)erthis after tea, and were sound1( ly sleeping. The Captain, after sociing the vessel safely pa2st thie Jersey coast, lay downu withl his clothes on~at three o'clock. Six miinutes later lie was aware that a sailing vessel was ahead, close at hand. iIe went to the wvheel house, stoppeOd the eiigine andL thon backedl thme steamer; but before the Champion's hieadwvay coulId be stop pecd the two vessels collided. They mot bows, and the Oclavia, b)eing thie stronger of the two, both beline of ironm, made a fearful hole in the C%aumpion through which the -sea poured in tor.. rents. Only one woman, thme stewar'd ess, was saved, anid only four male pas sengers. Captalin Lockwood made thme followiing repor't to a heald corres p)ondent: Chief Officer Leonard being on watch I left the deck at three o 'clo-k, and fh e or six minutes after I heardA ai sail reported ahead. I jumped into the pilot house, stoppe)d the steamer and saw a large full rigged ship bear ing down uIpon us. I rang the bell to roverse the engine, b)ut the ship was so near that before our headwvay was checked wve wore struck. The whole of the Champion's bows were stove in, and the forotopinast and head of (lie topmast wvenit by time board. LOSS OF THE1 FInST OFFIOERi. I then ordered the scecomnd mate aft to clear the' boats, but find ig the steamer settling so rapidly, dl rected him to cnt:he. falls away. I thenu ran into the cabin anid told every body to como on deck without waiting to dress. I then ordered the second mate to cut the life raft loose, and openi the boxes of life preservers anid distribute thmem about the deck, telling all in sight to put one 'on.
