Great Telescope Olasse.
The glass for the now refracting tele
scope ordered by the Russian Government,
when completed, will be the largest in the
world. Its extreme diameter will be from
thirty one and one-half to thirty-two Inches,
with a clear aperture of thirty inches.
J Three years and one-half are allowed for
its completion-two years to procure the
rough disks and eighteen months for grind
tension of time, provided good and sufficient
reasons are given for the failure to finish
within the specitled period. When Ilnished
the glass will be mounted in Hamburg.
The cost of the glass alone will be $32,000.
The material for the glass will probably be
furnished by French manufacturers, the
Clarks finding their disks to be most trust
worthy. As the procuring of glass of a
density as nearly uniform as possible, and
free from flaws, is of the utmost importance,
Mr. Alvan 0. Clark left for E'urope to a
certain the prospect of a careful complet ion
of that part of the contract. I Ic was4 ac

Sons, and will return in about six weeks.
The method of making glass of this 'size is
very Interesting. The raw material is
carefully selected and mielted in an ordinary
glass pot, allowed to cool and then broken
out. It is onc emore melted an( cast into
rough plates. These are placed in a mould
and heated until they are waxlike in con
aistency. Then they spread out and fill the
mould, making what are called the rough
disks. This IF the shapo In which they are
received by the Clarks, whose labor begins
at this polit. The disks are first mado
perfectly circular by means of a revolving
disk of iron, with the aid of wet, sand.
They are then roughly ground on an iron
plate, fed with sand and water, to sone
thing approaching the shalfe th3y will have
when completed. Then comes the line
grinding with cencry on another ron plate.
This part of the process hasts from six
weeks to two months, and the rest. of the
time is devoted to pohslhing, testing and
correcting. The polishing is done with
rouge on an Iron tool, covered N ith a ine
layer of tar and pitch, and hand :abor must
be employed. When the glass has received
its first polish it is set up and I.-sted, and
from this time on the work is a sitcession
of testing and correcting, .-peated until the
desired result Is reached. In this operation

require months to bring it to Its forner state
of completion. If the glasses were of ab
solutely InII'-ormn t1ensity throughout, the
operation would 1-c comparatively simple.
But such a piece of glass it is Impossible to
thid, and as each variation in refractive
power must be equalized, the glass needs
to be corrected in nearly every point of its
surface. As the glass is tested after each
correction, an inimense amount of patient,
careful labor is required. Again, the con
ditions under which the ghlass is to be used
must be taken into account, and ailso the
state of the atmosphere and the tempneratnre
when'the tests are made, conditions which
are never twico alike. As telescopes are
most used before midnight, their objectives
are corrected for a falling temperature.
One of the Clarks said that a glass which
would be called in fair condition might re
ceive several months' labor before being
what they would consider perfect, and yet
in that timo the amount of material removed
would not equal one-tenth of a grain in
weight. The largest glasses now in exist
ence; are the objective at Washington and
one made by the Clarks for McCormick,
but stIll In their p)ossesson, each of which
is twenty-six iniches in dliamfeter. Whein
this and the Russian glass are completed, of
the four largest glasses in the world, three
~ill have been mnade by Alvan Clark & Sons.
