and A. Ml. Kirkland. After building
a fhlt boat and a batteau and gelling all

The weather has been very fhvorable
thus far, cuabling them to iistake rapid
progress. They arrived in Ilickorv

B3elow time Shoals the r'iver' is navigable
for smlil steambhoats. Around1( the~
thr'ee shoals above mentionied wvere
for'merly Canals, built atbout fifty years
ago, whidch havec gonie to wreck, but of'
whichl the masonry of tihe locks is still
in good preservationi. These canals
were part of the genmeral system of
navigation which included the Santee
Canal, but they were not used for any
considerable length of time. Even
afe th1ey feil Into disuse, cotton was
sen t fr'omPeay's Fier ry over Love's
Shoals down the iver. If' only these
shoals were made navigable, it would
be of gr'eat benefit to the counities of
Chesteri, Faifold, Lancaster and Ker
shaw. Mr'. Daniel Wells, of Lancaster
county, has built him a cotton boat in
which lie pr'oposes to tramnsport cotton
this year as far at least as Acton, on the
Wilmington Road.
While Northern States are r'eceiving
liberal appropriations for trout streams
and mountain torrients, It is a shame
that such a flne water way is. thte
Watfer'ee River should1( be neglected.
We hope that Col. Evins will prIess for
the appiroprlation at the comning session
of Congress, especially as the obstruc
tions 'In question lie wholly within the
limits of his Congressional District.
