Make a hlen comfortable, and she will
lay. If a laying breed so miuch the
better. In winter there must be
warnth as well as light. Windows
will readily give entrance to the light
of the sun and the rellection of the
snow; but they should be made double,
so as to secure warmth, and well fitted
in, especially the outside sash. (lean
liness and fresh air are a necessity.
Ventilation and disinfectants are the
means to secure them ; the latter not
lacking in variety to meet the circum
stances, among which dry air, secired
by a coal stove, stands first, the stove
also serving as a superior ventilator to
carry off the heavy, noxious air below.
The windows, of course, are to he on
the south side, and if the north side is
secured by a rise of ground or the wall
of another building-anything that ef
fectually keeps out the cold-all the
better. This for winter. To carry out
the true spirit of a successful henery,
the keeper must be on good terms with
his feathered family, and permit of no
strange intrusions, to frighten the
fowls; for no frightened fowl will lay.
All disturbance, of whatever kind,
must be avoided, and kindness and
gout treatment exercised from earllest
chickenhood to the end. This makes a
fowl at home, and eager, it' a prollie
breel, for prop agaition. If she now has
a suiiiency, not, an excess, of food
the necessary variety, so that she is
satisfied ; Is strong, but not fat, with
pure water whenever she wants it, and
some gravol to grind her food; also
roon enough in her tlularters, so that
she does not feel continement-in a
word, if she is happy, she will lay.
Avoid, by all means, an exclusive diet
of corn. Let corn be among several
other grains, buckwheat leading.
Scraps of meat and otllet" animal food
should occasionally be given, as well
as green vegetable material, or in sum
mer access to grass and a range in the
fresh air. A n occasional forage of th is
kind, say once a day, is of vast beneflt,
and a pleas tre to the fowl, as well as to
the keeper who observes it.

chocolate color; discard potash of a
white color, as It is largely adulterated
with salt and lime) -3 pure rendered
rena]ered tallow or grease, twelve
pounds, dark resin, one-and-a-half
pounds. Directions for making: lanee
the potash in a suitable Iron kettle, and
add four or live gallons of boiling
water, and boll till the potash is all dis
solved. If it should attempt to boil
over, add at little cold water, whieh will
stop it. Let it stand at few hours to
settle, then drain off the clear lye and
add some more cold water to the sedI
ment, and drain off as before; repeat it
necessary to obtain all the strength.
Now add lie 1ye, tallow and resin to
gether, anid boil gently till the tallow is
thoroughly saponilled, or killed, which
is known when the soap becomes clear,
like strained honey. Now add from
twelve to lifteen gallons of water, and
set aside for use. ''wo poutds of the
tallow ean be otnitted If desired, and
two poulnd of bright palm-oil used li
stead. and the soap will be of a bright
golden yellow color, having a most
beautiful appearancliee.

boll rice for curry, &c., take one pound

procurable) and add one quart of pure
water; place on the lire, well covered,
keeping in t.he steam as much as poss -
ble ; boil till the rice is soft, than pour
