THE NEWS ND HER,LD'
TEL-WEEKLY EDITION.
"Br SwEARING, AND LYING, and
killing, and stealing, and committing
adultery, they break out and blood
toucheth blood," was the text (from
Hosea), from which the Rev. Dr. C.
W. Miller preached the funeral ser..
mon of Judge Elliott, the victim of
Kentucky's latest tragedy. There
are several new points of interest in
the case : Buford walked into a
crowded court room, in Frankfort,
on Friday, and sat by his adviser,
Gen. Green Clay Smith. The mur
derer had lost defiance. He was
pale, weak and generally broken
down. His coa,t was as white as his
face, for the whitewash from the
walls of the cell covered from collar
to bottom button. The trial will
take place as early as May. When
asked if he was "ready for trial,"
Buford is said to have starte quickly,
as if from a dream. Litter he said
that when Gen. Smith asked him he
thought that the voice of Judge
Elliott had asked if he were "ready
to go to the grave of his sister Mary."
But Frankfort says that the insanity
dodge will not work. The Blue.
grass Clipper, published at Midway,
Buford's home, says that Buford s
fine fortune has been ruined by the
eccentric courses of the law, that
Miss Buford died a lunatic, and that
an aunt of the assassin also died in
sane. The bar of the State 4gas been
convoked, and an election to fill the
vacancy has been ordered.
English newspapers very rarely
contain in the obituary column a
notice of a funeral, because, except
in the case of an eminent public
person, it is not desired that any
but near relatives or very intimate
friends should attend, and men
worth a million go to their graves
with less pomp and parade than a
New York car driver.
DEATH OF A NOTED STALLION.-The
famous trotting stallion Woodford
Mambrino, with a record of 2:21+,
owned by R. C. Pate, of St. Louis,
died a few days ago of congestion of
of the.lungs. .This horse was more
highly esteemed than any 'trotting
stallion in the country, although
kept in the stud until the season
of 1878, when he was fifteen years
old. His career on the turf was
remaxkably brilliant. At Minne
apolis, September 4, he won the
stallion race in straight heats, de.
feating Bonesetter, Scott's Thomas,
and Indianapolis, scoring 2:21 ,
2:22f and 2:22k, on a slow track.
Abbottsford, with a record of 2:21};
Magenta, 2:28j; Convoy, 2:28, and
George A. Ayer, 2:80, are some of
his produce. In* 1874, Robert
Bonner offered $85,000 for him.
Last fall his owner could have
named and received his own price
from several horse fanciers.
