GovrNORait CCI.:I,E,AN and the Re.
publican Senate of New Jersey are at
loggerheads over the appointment o
judges.
TiE Po-TTER investigation show'
two things, first, that some Demo
crats tried to steal back the Presiden
cy, and failed for want of funds, and
secondly, that the Radicals were suc
cessful both in stealing the Presidency
and then in stealinsr their oipher
despatches, by which the theft wi"
acconliished. The Radicals are con
siderably ahead in the game of fraud.
THEy sAY TIIAT Kellogg is one of
the warmest electioneerers in the
Senate for Butler. If Butler is un
seated nqw, Kellogg knows he will
go on the first week in next session,
whereas he hopes if Butler is left un
seated, he also may be permitted to
retain his seat. Shrewd observers say
that the object of' the whole movement
on the part of the Radicals is to col
mit the Democrats to the proposition
that a member once seated cannot be
turned out.
'I'rE CITY oF Elizabeth, New Jersey,
has gone into bankruptcy, with a debt
of about four millions. The last
meeting of the city council come near
being broken up by a mob. Memphis
groaned under a debt of five nillions,
and the Legislature of Tennessee
came to her relief by abolishing the
charter. But bondholders are not
satisfied and they are preparing to
fight, this mnovementt in the courts.
Mobile proposes to have her charter
abolished. A large number of cities
and counties out West are going in1to
bankruptcy. Itonors are easy, North
and South, on repudiation.
G(ovnaaon' Ta,m:x testified at groat
length before the ciplher committee on
Saturday, and directly and eircmn
stantially deni(3 all know1ledgo of or
complicity in attempt.' to buy the
Returning Ihoard. The cipher
despatehes were kept from him, and
the first he knew was that Pelton had
gone to Baltimore to receive a propo
sition. Mr.. Tilden says that hero
Pelton was guilty of wrong, that he
was misled by reports of what the
Radicals were doing and thought of
fighcing the devil with tire, but that
Mr. Tilden, believing that crime
begun in a small way would inevita
bly spr'ead, put his foot down on the
whole mat for mas soo.n as he hear'd of' it,
and1( ordered Peltoinaoe, Hie savs

together this exanmination has done
Mir. Trildein much good. It exoner
ates him from the charge of stooping
to bribery; and in doing so stamps
him as pre-emiinontly ahead of all the
par'ties on the other side who bar
