AND IIHMALD before the Old Year
runs out.
Christmas week was ushered in
with intensely cold but very bracing
weather.
The gobblers that eseaped Thanks
giving Day will no more lift up their
heads. 'Christmas will olean taen all
out.
The act levying an extra tax of a
mill and a half for defraying the ex
penses of the Fairfleld co unty fence
has been ratilled.
With a Vie W give tile 4elployees
on Tim NEws AND HIERALD little
Christmas rest, there will be ito pmPr
issued from this office Oi ThurF I.s LN'
n1ext.
Some revenue detectives have beenl
making recent raids in the lower part of
the county in search of illicit whiskey%
dealers. Their success has not been
reported.
TuE CARiEt's ADDiEss.-The car
rier will pay his customary call upon
the patrons of TuE NEws AND IERAILD
on Christmas. He has faithfully dis
charged all his duties during the year,
and deserves remembrance.
The Legislature was at work
under whip and spur on "riday,
Saturday and Monday, and despautched
a perfect mountali of business. It
would be impossible to enmerate in
a short space all tihe acts paded( and1(
ratified. The'Legislators seemedl deter
mined to eat Christmas din ner at home.
The fire on Monday night was at the
store of Mr. Wmn. HJ. Donly. The
roof caught fronm the stove-pipe, and
at one time there seemed a good
chance for a burning. But the
prompt turnout and good work of the
fire departmenmt checked the flames,
and little damage was done.
School trustees should be careful nol
to open too many schools at present,
for on reduced assessments tihe two
mill tax willl be smaller thani that of
last year. They should also niot allow
schools to continue with less thant tif
teen or twenty scholars. Certi f1catem
of twenty and thirty dollars for teach
ing onily half a dozen scholars will
hardly be approved, we think. Mo ney
S is too scarce to be squanidered in thal
way.
VAOATION.-Thie Mountd Zion Schoo:
has a vacation of~ three weceks. Duaring
the last week the tour hig~her gradet
were examined by' written examinatiom
oin the braniches in w'hich they wvere in,
structedl, and the general result was
quite crediltable. Thes average staudc
hats not yet been1 decIded, owin~g to th<
fact that about i'onr hndred differei
papers had to bo examined. The exor
cises of the school will be resumed oil
the 13th of January.
IIYMENEAL.--The reports of two
more weddings have reached us--one
of Mr. Wmn. Wilds, of.Darlngton, and
Miss Bessle P. Jones, daughter of Maj.
T. J. HI. Jones, and the other of Mr.
English Jenkins to Miss Alice Seigler,
daughter of Mr. D. J. Seigler.
All hymeneal notices sent to thil
paper will be gladly received and in
serted free of eharge. Send them in.
THE ENTERTAINMEATS.-No one will
forget that two entertainments of more
than usual Iptoret will be given by
the Histrionic Club--one this.eveiming
and the other to-morrow -evening.
The programme is varied and excel
lent, and cannot foil to give pleasure.
Chief interest will do tnese centre
on the votik1 fobiM ~h me sword
nroviMaafo the hioa ma~ a .m0
The tickets issued on Christmas Eve
will entitle the holdei to entrance to
a perfornmnco to be given on New
Year's Eve,. and should he kept.
