THE LEGIsLATUnE deserves high praise for the manner in which it is going to work, and for its wisdom thus far displayed, both in favoring good measures and in killing olrbad ones. Let it fulfill its promise of coming home for the Christmas holi days, and.it 'will have gone far in instating itself in the public confi dence. Fewer Elections. The News and Courier favois :a extension of the ternis of office, so that the State need, not - be harassed by so frequently recurring elections. South Carolina has been cursed with politics ever since the war, and the people need rest. In the anomalous condition of our politics It is the highest duty of every citizen to par ticipate actively in all electiolns, and relief can be properly obtained only by having fewer of3them. The crea tion of longer terms will tend some what, also, to check the scramble for office, and will necessarily result in securing greater efliciency on the part of public servants. Under the pres cut law their seats are scarcely warni before they are bounced out to make way for raw lihnds; while, in case they give satisfaction, it is much bet ter to allow then longe'r time without requiring the voters to go through the needless ceremony of re-electing them. The State officers should be chosen for four years. The expected passage of a bill by the Legislature authorizing the gov ernor to 1111, by appointment, all vacancies arising, from whatever cause, In odd years will be a great. relief. Fairfleld has at, present the prospect of holding an election every year for soine office or another. But if this law passes, the governor will, next year, appoint a sheritl' and a boilrd of county colnlissionerj to serve until tile general election of 1880, and in 1881 will appoint a clerk of court to hold office until tihe election of 1882, after which the terms of all the county o'flic.rs will expire On even dates. This is a very simple device for getting arountd a 'great trouble, and tie passage of the act will he one of the wisest pieces of legislation of the session.
