at once to get him away. On tihe
other hand it is urged that sending
lii to the Senate vould be "'shelv
ing",him. There are whole families
In South Carolina that are willing to
be shelved In that way.
Tim!E Straightout Democrat, in a
recent issue, says that Senator Gary
and the Hion. J. 13. Campbell are the
two boldest Democrats in South Caro
lina, and that both have been badly
treated. It intimates that the "in
grates" who have been guilty of these
wrongs should beware. This intiia
tion might be construed into fore
shadowving some sort of combination
betweeni the gentlemen nameld, were
It not known that tlWy are diametri
cally opposed in polikics ; Mr. Camp
bell's boast. being that he is the
champion par excellencc of the
"1ampton policy," while Senator
Gary uttery repudiates it.
The Tables Turned.
Mr. Nordhofir's letter in another
col n turns the tables completely on
the I adical pharisees who have been
crying fraud so vehemently, and it
also places Mr. Haves in a most un
pleasant predicamient. A week or two
ago we publishied an extract from Mr.
Nordhiof's cor.respon(lence as inl
evidence how even a fair and just man
had sufiered himself to be led astray
by Radical howls. He expressel
nothing bIt the greatest abhorrence
of the "crimes" of the Democrats.
But caln reflection has convinced
him that while the Democrats are not
blaneless, the Raicals have basely
lied, and have exaggerated ihets and
occurrences tenfold. A Few (liys ago
he expressed a conviction that ille
galities and frauds in the South were
sporadie, and does not deny that more
Demnocratts may have been intimidated
by Federal deputies inl the North, than
negroes bulldozed in the South. In
the extract published to-day, Mr.
Nordhoff shows that the ''onion skin"
tickets were used by the Radicals in
1876, and that one man who claimed
to have oarried Florida for Haves by
using sveuty-four of these "little
jokers" is now enjoying a place in the
treasury department. The Democrats
merely borrowed an old device, and
in some cases may have used it just
as it has been used in every State
bet,re. The concluding laragraph,
that "One man may steal a sheep while
another shall be hanged for looking
over the fenice,"' is a direct slap at
IIaves andl will doubtless cause his
Excellency to lose interest in the
matter of' investigations of .ballot-box
stuflhng. Th'le prodluction of' RIadical
''onion skins" and the wholesale
acquittals of Democrats in the Federal
courts for alleged intimidation and
fraud, are surely showing up Radical
ism in all its p)harisalcism and deviltry.
A Question that Should Not be Re
opened.
The most. dlangerous rock in the
course of the D)emocracy is the ques
tion of the public debt,. About its
p)ayment much honest difference of
opinion exists. We have no patience
with the extremists of either side,
who dub41 thet)ir opplonents "'repuldia
tors'' and ''bloated bond holders.'' It
is just as criminal to repudiate a legal
obligation as to endeavor to enforce
one0 that is illegal. TPhe question of'
the legality of' the dlebt of' South
Carolina is a matter resting entirely
w ith thme courts, and, until they decide,
the people are at sea. And yet at
* tempts are making to re-open the
whole quest ion in the Legislatumre and
to tear af'reshm the wounds of last, ses
sloon, to diisomrb needlessly a compro
mise thant enabled the Doemocraey to
work with harmony in the last cam
paign. We regret. to see that Senator
GayadM.Mra have made
inteperte peecebes. Such argu
mlents (do 1o1or of goodl. Nobodly
was ever won by them. The1 Legisla
ture will be wise to lay the whole
matter over for this session. If no0
betrreason cani be1 addutcd it is
sulcetthat both IIouses have re
pleOIJ are waiting to see if this reso
lution will be carried into effet--a
matter on which they are rallher
skeptical, 1f the members desire
fgain to represent their constitutent s
they will be much more likely to
accomplish their object by coming
homne oni the 23d instant, than by
wrangling inte'rmninably over a~ miatte'r
that should for the p)resenit at least

TU.ANING THE TABLES.
A Democratic Infringement on a RO
publican Invention- I The "Little Jo -
kers" of Florida and South Carolina.
(Aordi.qff's Letter to, lflm- ei York lerald.]
WAsINC;TON, Deeetnber (I.-There
is something refreshingly cool and
impudent in the clamor which some0 of
the Republican politicians are making
over the use of the small onion skin
tickets, called ''little jokers," in some
of the South Carolina counties at the
recent election. h'lle Southern Re
publicans, who now cry out about
these instrumlents of fraud, were the
inventors of thei, and used them
with great etect in the election of
1876. In fact, one of them, a Florida
Republican, who now holds a place
in the treasury department here, Is
reported to have boasted that the
seventy-four "little jokers" which he
deposited In the ballot-box, of which
he was the gua.tdian, carried the State
for Hayes.
o0 course a Republican fraud in
1876 does not justify a Democratic
fraud in 1878; but when tile two
tickets placed side by side below in
fae simile are compared, it will be
seen that the Republicans have 110
reason for the virtuous horror they
are manifesting. Here are two "littfe
jokers," the Repiublicaii of 1876 and
the Democratic of 1878:

fraiud; and lie accordingly fled and
