the loaves and fishes, and Lancaster is
a bad place to get them.

aid for a southern route to tihe Pacific
by way of Texas, New Alexico andm(
Arizona. But so many milflionis,
during the hoey-dlay of' .1adicalism,
were expendled up~oni the Union anid
Central Pacitie r'oads anid on thme
Northern Pacilc le tht earnest lpoests
have been mamde by thme p)eople aigainist
any further subsidies, that Coingress
men have found it convenient at, this
late day to become very stingy-. A
southern route is the natural cont i
nenital highway thr' the lower parallel
along which It runs and is comparaitive
ly free from the ice anid sniows which
bury whole trains for days ou the
Central Pacinic durinig thme winter sea
son. The conmplet ion of this route is
also demanded as a matter of,justice to
this section of thie Union, which has so
p)ersistently been cut out of any par'
t.iciplatioin in thle gover'mental sub)sidlies.
