EDUC.ATION, Coi.u.mma.-, S. (1., Sept. 24, 1878. To the County School Commission ers of the State of South Carolina: Enclosed yolu will fild the list of text books adopted by the State Board of Examiners for ulse ill the public schools of this State, under the pro Visionls of $5 of "All act to alter and( amenld thle School Law of Southl Caro 1lina," app)lroved March 22, 1878. No othier text books than those prescribed inl this list can be lawfLully used in the plublic schools of this State, except in the City of Charleston. It is nlot ill tenlded that all thle text books which hlave been adopted shall be used in every school, but ill arranging tile coursos in thle different schoo01s, tile teacheors mullst select from1 this list such books as may be founld best adapted to thle wants of thleir p)up1ils. The Legis lature, at its last session, made nio ap propriationl for the p)urchlase of text books. In viewv of tile great advantage of ulniformnity ill the text h)ooks, school officers are earnlestly ulrged to impllress upon01 paren1ts the necessity of prompt comphlance with the law. Tile differ enit pulblishing houses0, whlose books hlave been1 adopted, wvill ofilrsuch te3rms for inltroductionlof the books p)rescribecd and for exchlange of those now inl use as wvill put these books within the reach of all the pupils attendingr tile public schools. Very respectfiully, Hiuor S. TrloMPsON, State Supt. Education, S. C. WASHING AwAY THES COLOREn GRAvEYARDl1.--The encroachlmen ts 01 tile large guilley in rear of the Methlod ist church have long been watched with apprehlensionl as tile friable nlatulre of the soil causes it to be easily unde4r milled anId to cave inl ill hunge blocks. Thle gulley some time ago reachled the borders of thle coloredgraveyard. After tile last wet spell another landslide occurred and the earthl in falling in carriediwithl it six coffins with thieir con tents. A visit to tihe place revealeda number of hluman bones thlat 1had not been covered up, while the debris of tie coffins lay in conIfusionl where they hIad fallen. Ill the p)erpenldiclar wvall of earth bordering thle guiley?, and aubout five feet fr'om thle top can be s0o1n a number of coffins with the ends wrenched oif, anid preseutinlg a ghastly appearance. Tile townl counceil has dug ditchles anId erected a trough te carry off tile water, so that tile caving will nlot conItlinue; but it is implossible to fill the gullley up. Several years ago the colored people purchased a plat o: ground nlear tile freight depot, of whlich they have mnade a cemetery, and they have recently been endeavoring tor1aise mfoneoy to mnove the remains from the( thrieatenedloeality. Itis to be hmoped the) will succeed. Among the graves thus r'uthlessly violated bytile forces of naturse is said to be tat of old Dick Lewvis, who was wvell known through thle peculiar manner In which his lower limbsalappe oer anh othar in walking SANFOID's ARIIMEToS.-Ainmong the text books selected by the State 110ard i>r use in) tle public sh(,1ools atre Sanflorl's ut-ithine(ies. This series was preired by P1roflessor Sanford, of Georgia, and it, has been widely adopt ed in teio South. It is based oil the analytic syslem, and the analysis and and rules are1 very clear. The arrange mIleit Is Very good, anld it Is fully up to the times. The HerieH has high tsiti moilals. While iot so profound or so diefllIt a Robinon's series, it is ad mirable for all ordinary schools. San ford's arithinetic is in plrtial use in the Winmnsboro Graded School, and is quite satisfactory. Speaking of these arith metics, Prof. J. A. Gamewell, of Wof ford College, writes: Having used Sanford's Higher Ana lytical Arithinetic for three years, I take pleasure inI saying that it has met the wants ofiny class so satis factorily that 1 am uINVilliig to ex change it for any similar work. The analyses are easily titiderstood, making ana, N"",bi , g (Ile examles thit follow appear leS difficult than, they are. The analysis explaining the inrversion of the divisor iII dividing one fraction by a fraction is excellent. Percentitge is thoroughily t rented. I have got fen from this arlithi metic much valuatble informilion. Wllithout h.esitationi, I reconnend it to all teachlers.
