In the gloomy days of '76, wihen the po litical sky was so heavily overeast, ald Chamberlain mid his associates were seen above the horizon ats thunder clouds thrcatening destruction to our devoted counitry, ald when Tm N-ews AND) lIIALD came touus with the t,idings' orf those dreadful riots at Cainhoy anid Charleston, thenu it was that the law abiding and pecaceful citizens of Ridge wvay and viciniity were aroused to the .true state of aflhirs. It was at this time that might have beeni seen going to some p)lace of renidezvous all the men of our village, from thegray-heads to the beardless boys, all with determi nation written oni their brows. The Ob)ject of these meetings wvas to or ganize fhr the p)rotect.ioni of our homes andl firesides, anid to render assistance to any other section that might call on us8 for aid. All this may and probably does seem foolishness to any onie who did not plarticipiate in the excitement of those times. A colllection of men without any special leader, andl with * 1mnogovernimnt except mutual interest, was gradually organnized into a rifle company with R. S. Desportes, Esq., as cap)tain. The next event-in our his tory was our disbanmnt by his Ex cellency (?) G overnor Chamiberlaini. To this we apparently sublmitted, but were all the time as a unit. Under the * home rule of Governor HIamplton the company again hunmg its flag to the breeze, and adopted its present' name. It having been decided by the compa ny to celebrate their aniversary each year by a shooting- match and p)icniic, last Friday was selected as the day. The company assembled at their head quarters about nIne o'clock, anmd pr'o coeded to their shiootinmg ground near Palmer's sprinig, about the best loca tion for a p)icic we ever' saw. The fIrIng, at a regular Creedmore target, a hundred yards, was commenced by Orderly E. P. Davis, who struck the "'black" and scored five. Shortly after followed Hlaynes, Lowther and C. Wr}lker with a score of five each. The shooting continued, and out of one hundred and two shots only two or three missed the target, andl the bull's eye had at least a dozon balls In it. While the firing progressed, the Guards chatted with the fair sex, manmy of whom graced the occasion with their presence, amnd alas! one soldier so far A for'got himself as to actually degrade his bayonet by using It on the sly to Impale some pickle for his fair companion. McQuat ter8, declared that Privato IHaynes had wou the prize by scoring fourteen, or one less than the mnaximui. Sergeants Davis and Lowther and Privates Walker and Lamar scored thirteen each. Few scored less than tenl, and the entire shooting was pronounced by Col. Elkin to be the best, he had ever wit nesed. Thle prize, a smatll imdittion, in silver, of the (reedmore target, and a present to the company fron Captain Desportes, is to be shot for yearly, 1111d1 each wimiter is expected toadd another bar-pendant inscribed with his name and score. Thus in time it will become quito a beautiful badge, and wvill be worn wit.hi pride by the best, shot of the year. Major Thomas inl a very pretty anld appropriate specch delivered the prize, and cautioned the wearer that his laiurels be not plucked from his brow at the next match. Ie consoled the instcessful Competitors by saying that. they had done well, and had only lost by their comrades' doing better. The 11. R. (.'s then gave three rousing cheers, at the Captain's proposal, for their newly elected nurjor. Returning to headqlarters, the colipally was dis missed toassemble for drill on Thursday evening. The 11H1op" at night was quite a. success, and we were pleased to welcome some of our fullow-sol(liers of the G. L. 1. inl their handsome uni form, as well as som1e of the other Boro boys. The beauty and intellect of the fair sex of Winnsboro were also well represented oil the grounds and at the hop. Thus ended the pleasures of the day. RIFLEMAN.
