oflicer, the Democratic county conven
tion has, by a very flattering vote, re
comeionded his re-appoint ment.

This company, composed of colored
inen, colebrated their alniversarv on
Wednesday by a parade picnic. There
was a good turnout Of the men, and
the company presented a fine appear
ance. In the afternoon the ustual elec
tion of offleers was to be held, butt here
was such confusion and wranling ithat
the town authorities had to interfere,
and the meeting adjournled.
Messrs. J. -'. McMaster & Co. have
now in store a full and well selectedI
stock of goods in great variety, all of
which they ofler at low prices. The
senior of the firm has just. returned
from the Northern markets, wlere he
spent soine time in the selection of his

Tun EXA~MNATOs.-Thie County
hoard of Examinol's have fixed on two
days for examining appllicants for teach
ers' certificates. The questions will lbe
sent from Columbia, and as there will
be but one set, It Is necessary to ex
amine all applicants for thle same grade
on the same day. The coming exami
nation wvill differ fr'om the one held( last
spring, inasmuch as there wvill be a
separate set of questions for each grade,
and a person failing to secui'c eighty
per cnt. oni any paper will have to ap
ply anew for a lower' girade. In order
to accommodate applicants, those as
pirlig to tihe first grade will be exam
ined together oin tihe 19th, and on the
following Saturday examinations will
be held for tihe two lower grades, so
that any person falling to secure a first
grade certificate may have an oppor
tunity of trying for a lower gr'ade.
Only two days can be0 granted, anr1 ap
plicants failing to appear at the proper
time wvill have to wait a year bofore
havinig another opportunity. It will
also be necessary to be on hand punctu

.by the Intendant and Wardens of
the Town of Winnsboro, S. 0., in Coun
oil met, that
1. For the purposo of raising supplies
for the year commencing the first of'
A pril, 1878, and ending the first of April,
1879, a tax for the mums and in the nan-.
nor hereinafter mentioned shall be raised
and paid into the treasury of the said
town for the use and service thereof, that
is to hay: two and one half mills ad valo,
rem upon every dollar of the value of all
tho.real and personal property 'within,
the corporate limits of the said Town of
Wiunsboro; throo dollars to be paid by
every male inhabitants of said town, be
tween the ages of eighteen and forty-five
years, in liou of woyking upoln the streeta
of said town; and three per cent. upon
the amount of all sales at auction.
2. All taxes assessed and payable
under thid Ordinance shall be paid in
thp following kinds of funds and no
other: Gold and silver coin, United
States Currency aid National Bank
Notes.
3. All taxes assessod hereinshall bo due
and payable between the first day of
October, 1878, and the thirtieth day of
November, 1878, inclusive; nid all taxen
remaining duo and unpaid on the first
day of December, 1878, shall be collected
by distress or otherwise, as now pro-.
scribed by law, together with all legal
costs.
4. All persons holding property ii; the
corporate limnits of the said Town of
Winnsboro, are required betwveen the
first day of August, 1878, and the six-.
tecnth day of September, 1878, to make a
