"Winnsboro has bcon in a state of wild excitoment for i few days over the sudden appearance of an ill wind or soimethirg olse that blew disease into her midst, regardless of her former well known reputa tion for health. As everybody knows, on Friday the mass ineet-ing took place, and on the same night, a concert was given in tho Thospian Hall, which wits largely atteided. During that entertainment ice cream was served out pleatifuhlly. On Saturday afternoon and nigit, without any premonitory symptomins, one person after another was seized with a chill followod by a hot fever, and in some cases with severo nausea and pains, until by mid-day on Sunday at least forty cases were reported in town. As there had been no chills and fever in the place for several years, curiosity was aroused as to the eaue. One portion of the medical fraternity attributed it simply to the effects of malaria ; another, after inquiry, suspected that somiething might have beenl the matter with the ico cream. Circumstaneos seemed to corroborate thi5 theory, as every sick person was said to have pa taken of the cream, and several persons wlo did ilot attend the concert, but had refreshments sont to their houses, were seized in the same manier and at tho samie timei., while the only colored person in towii reported sick was the ono who had manipulated the ice oretiu freezer. The attacks, though vio lent, passed away with out seriou s consequences, and by Monday after noon most of the victims3 wore able to appear on the streets. It was subsequently ascertainodl that some of the persons attacked had not partaken of refreshnlents, and that somec who had, had suffered no harm. Reports were received from one locality in the cuntry that .seventoon eases syoreo developed on the same night. Tho solution of the matter still resta in doubt. The chills have generally not put in a reappearance, thus pointing to the ice cream. On the other hand tihe reports from other localities support the malaria theory. It is possible that the expoisure on Friday and Friday night andl tihe peculiar cond~ition of the climanntc, and the) ice cream, whether poisoned or not, all cmombineod to p)rodu cc tihe strange effects. We have never heard of sneh a swvooping attackc of any disease in Winnsboro before. Some parties thought thme yollowv fever was coming, sure. But their fears wero soon allayed. ~Never theless the matter has been town talk for several days. Thme epidemic played havoc with our intended report of Friday's proceedings. When tile next toxico-malarial aimoomn calls round, TnE Nsws AND HERALD will be "not at homoet THEIL YELLAOW1 REIVRm SUFF.1ERERS. Mefcsrs.
