We are requested to announce
that there will be a meeting of the
Good Templars to-night at 7j
o'clock.
The entertainment ou Friday
night, in aid of Mount Zion Insti
tute, was in every way a success.
The songs and plays wore most
creditably rendered, and the au
dience was highly delighted.
There will be a barbecue and
picnic at Dr. Ira T. Smith's spring
on Friday next, given by the
Democratic clubs of Townships
Nine and Ten. The candidates are
respectfully invited to attend.
The Fairfield Light Dragoons and
the Gordon Light Infantry each
p tradoel on Friday afternoon, and
presented their usual handsome and
soldier-like appearance. Both these
companies are an honor to the
county, and the citizens should give
them all the encouragement possible.
2'HE D1E MOCA T.IC M1CEET1NG,
Tremendous Gathi-ng of the Rod,
Shirts--The Mounted Procession
stirring Sieeches, and the Greatest
Enthusiasm.
If anybody ever had any doubt
of the fino condition of the Demo .
cratic organization in Fairfield, such
doubt must have been entirely dis
polled on Friday last. There was at
o0ne time somo little apprehension
that the turnout would be small. It
had been two years since the
Democrats of the county~ gathered
together at te county-seat, and
it was a question with some whether
the same enthusiasm exhibited then
would show itself now. The fact
of there being no opposition to the
State ticket was calculated to chill
the ardor of the party, and to
cause them to take3 less than their
former interest in tihe State cam-~
paign. Another cause for appr%
hension was the extremely bad
weather on Thursday. Tihe rain
fell in torrents, continuing till late
in tihe afternoon. Then, howvever,
tile clouds began to break, and
Friday dawned as bright and
beautiful as the most enthusiastic
"lRed Shirt" could desire.
The clubs were not long in comn
ing in, and by ten o'clock-the hour
named in the order of the County
Chairmnan--most of them wvere on
tile College Green, ready for duty.
The procession was formed, under
command of Capt. WV. G. Jordan,
acting as chief marshal, the clubs
being arranged in the following
order :
Music.
Greenbrier Club.
Oakland Club.
Gladden's Grove Club.
White Oak Club.
Feasterville Club.
Riidgeway Club.
Horeb Club.
Music.
Yonguesville Club.
* Cedar Creek Club.
Bear Crook Club.
Salem Club.
Jenkinsvillo Club.
Jackson's Creek (flub.
Longtown Club.
Doko Club.
Monticello Club.
(The members of the Winnsboro
Club, in the procession, owing to
the want of horses, were not many
in number, and they therefore at
tached themselves to the,. different
country clubs.)
The number of men in the
mounted procession was in the
neighborhood of one thousand, very
few of whom were not in red shirts.
'The number of colored men was
unusually large, and gives evidence
of the strong hold that the Demo..
better and the thinking portion of
the race. The pr eession moved
from the College Green to Congress;
street, and down Congress to the
Winnsboro Hotel, at which point
the carriages containing the speak
ers and other gentlemen fell into
the column, between the band
wagon and the club at the head
the Greenbriers. The procession
presented a very fine appearance.
Several of the clubs had their flags,
and in the ranks of the Groonbriors
were two very funny and vory
significant things-one an efligy of
our mulatto senator and the othor
the hide of the old Radical fox that
was driven into his hole in 1876 by
Major Woodward and the Feasters
villo fox-hunters. The effigy of
Israel-boing a rag-baby whose
countenance showed just about as
much intelligence as is possessed by
the poor fool who now disgraces
Fairfield county in the Senate-was
carried on a polo by colored Demo-.
crat, and bore the inscription, "'s
Sinitor Byrd, I is." The fox-skin
was likewise carried by a colored
red-shirt, and told very plainly how
completely "gone up" is the dirty
renegade who so long dishonored
the Stato in the Federal Congress.
Arrived at the stand, in tho pines
near the residence of Jno. D. Smart,
the men formed around it, and in roar
of the seats that had boon provided for
the ladies and others. Besides the
mounted men, there were a large
number of people, whito and color
ed, around the stand.
The meeting wias called to order
by Gen. Jno. Bratton, county chair
man, who briefly stated its purposo
and then introduced, as the first
speaker of the day, Lieut.-Gov. W.
D. Simpson. Then followed in suc
cession Coiptrollor-General John
son Hagood, Hon. John 0. Shop
pard, Col. James G. Gibbes and
lon. John H. Evins, all of whom
made fine speeches.
[We regret extremely that, in
consequcnce of the sudden and
sovero indisposition of both tie
editors, we are unable to give, in the
present issue, a full report of the
sp)oches. Wa Shalll endeavor to
do Ho on a future occasion.]
At the close of the regular exer
cises loud calls were made for Major
Woodward and Captain Gaillard, and
these gentlomen responded in a few1
remarks, wvhich wvere most en thusi -
astically received by thme crowd.
The clubs then dispersed, and
after remaining in towvn a short time
for refroshmnent, the men won t
quietly to their homes. As a gen
eral thing the utmost good pre
vailed during the day. TIhere was
at one time a little misunderstand
ing between some of the men, but
matters weore very soou amicably
arranged, and no harm was done.
As the regulations declare
that no candidate can be
voted for at the primaries
unless he has previously pledged
himself to abide by and support the
nomination, it is suggested that the
several candidates in the field send
their pledges to thme county chair
man at once, so that he can give
official notification before the 30th
instant. The election is drawing
near and there is no time to lose.
See notice in another column.
Fairfield may be put down as safe
for the Democrats in November.
Joe Thompson, thme leader of the
Radical negroes. had better accept
this fact at once, and cease pursuing
a course that can only cause bad
blood between thme races, and, in the
event of a disturbance, bring seri..
ous misfortune on his own guilty
head. Joe is being keenly wvatched,
and he had better take warning at
once.
