HiE 'subject wa~s a history of some of th< leading political events since th< formation of our government dowr: to the present time. Truly a fruit ful theme, but tile fiold is too exten sive to be occupied by a brief speechl The General's speech was a success, His styl'e is e asy, elegant, polished. Some of the ladies mnanifestod thmei lippi'eciation of tile Georai's effort bythe presentation of a magnificent bouquet. Thle General's remarkE wvdre addrossod to "fellow-cit~izens,"' but the most- casual observer could seO thlat ho was looking at the ladies. Theo venor'able Major Pagarngas next introduced. With his fl'owing ioeks imd wvhite board ho looked the true patriarch. The Major' said ho wvas not accustomeb to public spoaking, but wh'en ediled on thought -t bla d1uty to respond. The views of Niajor Pagau~ on matters of ,public policy are souird tind practical.' Ho would bo a safo and reliable repro sontativo. Col R. G. Lamar was next intro (reed. Is not in tlie habit of public speaking. Discussed at some length the current political topics. Col. L. is a fluent and forcible speakor. After an intomission of about. one hour for dinner and a "chat" with the ladies, Mr. H. A. Gaillard was introduced, and discussed at some length taxation, fence law, phos phatos and Radicalism. Mr. G. is an able, eloquent and Polished speaker. At the conclusion of his speech three rousing checors were given for the "rising young lawyer ind statesman." Messrs. Robertson and Vinson, candidates for school commissioner, were ros'pectively introduced, and gave their views on tho educational interest of the county.' We doubt not that both of them think they ought to be elected. Sorry we cant vote for everybody. During the progress of this met ing our mind reverted to other days whcn there were giants in the land, such mon as Means, Palmer Alston, Buchanan, Boyco and a host of oth, ors. They are gone and wo shall soo thom no moro. May their ashes rest in poac. Wo hopo our young men will' prove themselvcs worthy sons of these noble 'siros.
