In acceptance - of an invitation
kindly extended by Mr. Edward
Ragsdale, the County Executivo
Conuni tteeman of tho Jenkiisvillo
Club, the editor, on Saturday last,
attended a club mo oting. Capt. I.
A. Gaillard had tlso been invited to
address tile club on the issues of the

ing by the Kincaid's 1>ridgo road.
Many years had elapsod since ve
traveled this road before. Yet
wo thought we had retained full
recollection of itp hille and
gullies. but wo were mistaken.
Wo had just crossod the branch
outside of the Boro when wo began
to ascend, and it seened that for
almost all tie rest of then way we
still continued to go up hill, oxcept
in those places wh.ere svo were j
;imminont danger of being propelled
by gravity over the dashboarid on
tihe horse's back. It was up hill and
down down h.ill., "oxcoIsior" and
"proclivior" atll the way, and when
the road.couldn't get a fair chance
at a hill otherwise, it seemed to go
oat of its way to get the stoopost
pirt and attack it at .right angles.
It takes a. good team~ to drag a load
over it od, and there is little
prospect of horsepower being

use it has sagged in the middle until
it has taken the curve of 'a loos'o
cilethos line. The commissioners
hitve posted it as dangerous, but

belowv in the shape of a ford. A

The contract has booni awarded to

politics, not gastronomy. After
dinnor wo set out for Shiloh church,
where the club was to moot. A
goodly numbor of the members wore
present. Dr. John Wallace, the
j)rosident, called the club to order,
and after a few remarks showing
that the conVt is not Silply'politi
cal, but onc for pelf -preservation, 0h
invited Captain Gaillard to ad(ross
the club. Captain Gaillard com
plied in an earnest talk, roviewing
the courso of the Democratic ad
ministration, the reforms it has
wrought aud the absoluto nocessity
of keepind the Stato in the cotrol
of the Democrciy. Ho urged the
club to pay no heed to side issues
in the midst of the great contest for
freedom. Ho showed, by a com
parison of expenditures, that the
government is now run more cheap
ly than it was before the war, and
said that still greater roductdons
could bo made. He hoped that no
one would le aisappointeid because
two years of Democratic rule had
not made the Stato rich. All a
government can do is to secure to
every man tho fruits of his labor,
lie concluded with thanks to his
hearers for their attention.
Lr. Davis was ih.n invited tQ
speak, and made sone remarks on
the general nature of the contest,
the election in South Carolina l)eing
but a part of the struggle between
opposing prmncipleu- Ho urged
unanimity, and predicted success.
Dr. Wallace then, after callsumade
some forcible and humorous remarks.
He treated the question ethnol'ogi
cally, and showed that nothing
could be expected from black donii
n .ticn but utter ruin. Wo had been
cheated out of the governmont, and
must got it back. He was interrupted
with frequent applause. It was re
solved that the club should moet on

p. m. T1he president hoped' that
the club wvould procuro red shirts
for the campaign.
After adjournment there was a
general conversation on politics.
Wo found tihe club in the healthiest
condition. The members have no
candidates of their own, but express
a determination to vote for th'o best
in ar regardless qf personal consider
ations. They wvant a good dloga
tion, and wvill do all they can to so
cure one. We came deliberately to
the conclu sion that d.isaffected
Demnocrats and straigh tout Radicals
will alike have a rough time if they
tackle Jenkinsvillo.
After this wye retuirned to the
Bor~o. On our way we noticed one
thing-that though the road .wa sal
up hill going.aver, it seetmed 'to libe
all up~ hill coming back. The long
trip was, however, made without
mishap, and nothing occurred to
mar the pleasures of the occasion.
