Mount Zion School will be opened again on the 2d of September. The Histrionic Club will give an other entertainment on the 11th of September. The Hampton. Rife Guard of Ridgeway will drill for the fist time in full uniform on Tuesday. A hop will be given before long. It is welcomed by all like a new star in society. We mean Dr. Bull's Blood Mixture. * The State Democratic Executive Committee has appointed Friday the 13th day of September as Hampton day in Winnsboro. The Democrats must appear in full force on that day. 'THE HAMPTON HERALD.-We should at an earlier date have congratulat ed the people of Rock Hill upon the reappearance of the hampton Herald. The herald is a live paper, and is soundly Democratic. We wish it prosperity. MT. ZION SOcIETY.-A full meet ing of this society was held on Thursday, at which arrangements were made to raise the necessary amount to continue the graded School. The subject of education was fully discussed, and the pro ceedings were full of interest. The Yorkville Enquirer was mis taken in supposing that the appoint ment of an alternate to West Point gives him an opportunity of com peting again at that place for the cadetship. The statement is au thorized that only in case the regu, lar appointee shall fail from any cause to enter the academy at the time appointed by law, the alter nate will be entitled to apply for the position. The Enquirer in its last issue makes the correction. DEATH OF Mus - T. W. WOODWARD. -Mrs. T. W. Woodward died on Wedneslay evening of congestion of the brain, after two days' illness. Mrs. Woodward was a native of Orangeburg, and a sister of the late Col. Olin M. Dantzler, but. she had resHidadl since her marriage in Fair floid. She was a pattern of Ch'ris tian virtue, and by her gentleness, amibility and quiet dignity en deared herself to all who knew her. Her remaidns wer3 interred in the Methodist church--yard. The sym pathy of the entire commuhity goes forth to the bereaved family. OURs lxONS ON THlE SCHOOL LAW. MAessr8. Editors .- T here seems to be some misapprehension in the minds of a good many of our people with reference to the duty or power of the school comissioner in locating schools in the different parts of the county. It is a matter of consider.. able importance, especially as it may influence a good many votes in the approaching election ; and in order to a proper understanding of it, I hope that you or the school commissioner will give full and satisfactory replies to the fol lowing inquiries : 1. Can the school commissioner establish a school in any township without the consent, or against the wishes, of the school trustees in said townshipi 2. Have not the school trustees the sole power to establish schools in their respective townships ? 8. In a locality where a school would be composed of children from two or more townships, can such school be established mn any other way than by the concurrence of the trustees in the different townships representedi 4. Can the school commissioner draw upon the school fund to pay a teacher, except upon a pay-certlicate first signed by the trustees of the township in which the teacher's school is locatedi 5. Are not the school funds dis tributed in the different townships in~ proportion to the number of ch~ildren attending school in eacht9 A full reply to the above inquiries will, I think, not only rmove a false impression ' from the minds of a good meany. but wil alia shaw the proper remedy for evils comphtined of. Not only the e~incation of our children, but the futiue welfare of county and State, in a great measure depends upon the proper manage ment of our public twhools. How important that we have as school commisn3siorer one who is thoroughly conversant with both the thery and management of such schools, and who will work to promote their efficiency and success. Let our people think well over this matter before casting their votes in the primary election, and not allow prejudice or personal preference to influence them where so much is at stake. INQUIRER. Kount Zion Graded School The Fall Session of Mount Zion Graded Sclool will begin on the 2nd of September, nt 9 o'clock, a. mu under the rules and regulations heretofore governing it.
