:IsELF.-That )Popllar humorous
let uror Do Cordova, says Harpers
WVeekly, was a passenger by the
Scythia ol her last trip from Liver
pool to New York, and, as a matter
of nourse, bore his part in all the
impronlptu social entertainents
that enlivened the tediumi of the
voyago. One day a happy thought
struck one of the passengers, that
Do Cordova shonhl be invited to
deliver one of his inimitable lectures
in the ship's saloon, nld that the
proceeds sh ,uld be divided equally
betwoon a Liverpool and a New
York charity ; but the captain r"e,
fused the uso of the saloon for this
purpose unless aill the proec(S
woro given to Liverpool. The
English passengors wero quite as
inldignaant as the Amnerieaans at this
dog-in,the-lmaniger attitude, and
tried in vain to induce the captain
to change his mind. Finding him
obstinato, the passengers iivited
Do Cordova to give thom a lecture
on dock, and one fine afternoon
wor entertained with a witty and
humorous familiar talo about "Mrs.
Grundy." All wore delighted ; and
when the hat was passed around it
very liberal contribution was made,
the whol of which, by th express
desire of the English pit ssonge s,
who gave all the more freely to
show their disapprobation of the
captain's obstinacy, was handed
over to the Children's Aid Society
of this city. But for the illiberality
of the captain, half of the sum
would have gone to some Liverpool
charity.

There Is a curious story about some nativ<
wines which are extensively advertised nowa
days, and have only recently beeni put upoi
the market. Dr. Untderhili , the well-know,
grape-grower of Croton Point, died in 187!
Some of his heirs entertained temperanc<
views of such extreme kind, that they wer<
unwilling to allow the stock of wines t henoi1
hand to be0 sold or any more to be made
Tihe grapes have sometimes been sent t<
market, and sometimes left to decay upoi
the vines. It is only now that the other heir
hlave succeeded in arranging for a settlemenl
of the estate and the sale of the wines o,
hand. Among these is a wine of tile vintag
of 1864, described as a "Sweet Union Port,
but suggesting the Imperial Tfokay mfor,
than any other European wine, and beinlj
wholly unlike any other wine of Americao
growth. Its purity, age and mellowness ari
remarkable, and botht physicianls and wine
fanciers have a spccial interest in it as the
oldest nlative wine nowv accessib)le In any con
