The Now York board of health has issued the following circular in relation to the care and feeding of infants during tho hot weather : In nursing, over-fuoding does more harm than anything else ; nurse an infant a month or two old every two or three hours. Nurse an infant of six months and over, five timos in twenty -four hours and no more. If an infant is thirsty give it pure water, or b.rley w.iter, no sugar. On the hottest days, a fow drops of whiskey mly be added to either water or food, the whiskey not to exceed a teaspoonful in twenty-four hours. If the infant must be fed, boil a, teaspoonful of powdered barley (ground in a coffe-grincer) and a' gill of water, with a little salt, for fifteen minutes, strain, then mix it with half as mach boiled milk, add a lump of white sugar, size of a walnut, and give it lukewarm from a nursing bottle ; keep bottle and niouth.picco in ai bowl of water wlhen not in use, to which Ia little soda mitay ad.led. For infants fivo or six months old give half barley water, and half boiled milk, with salt and a lump of sugar. For older infants give more milk than barley water. For infauts vary costive, give oatmeal instead of barley. Cook and strain as before. When your breast-nilk is only half enough. change off between breast milk and this prepared food. In hot weather, if blue litmus paper, appiied to the food, turns rod, the food is too acid, and you must make a fresh mess, or add a small pinch of baking soda. In fante of six montl.s may have beef tea or beef soup once a day, by itself, or mixed with other food ; and when ten or twelve months old, a crust of bread or piece of rare beef to suck, No child uader two years ought to oat at your table. Give no candies, in fact, uothing that is not contained in these rules, without a doctor's orders, Summer eAYnmnM n mmns -yom over-toodmng amnd hot foul air. I oep doors and windows open. Wash your well children with cold water twice a day, and oftener in the hot season, Never neglect looseness of the bowels in an infant ; consult the family or dispensary physician at once, and he will give you rules about what it should take and how it should be nursed. Keep your rooms as cool as possible, have them well ven ila ted, and do not allow any bad smell to como from sinks, garbage-boxes or gutters about the house where you live. See that your own aprrtments are right. Whero an infantis cross and I irritble in the hot weather, a trip on water will do it a great deal of good, (ferryboat or excursion boat,) and may prevent choler4 infantum, THwARTING AN INSUIIANCE Dow0E.-, A law of Virginia which became operative this month, and which is of concern to all insurance compa. nies doing business in that Coin monwealth, provides "that in any action against an insLurance cornpan y no failure to perform any condition of its policy, nor violation of augr restrictive provision thereof, shall be a valid defense to such action, unless it appears that such condition or restrictive provision is printed in type as large, or larger, than that in which the acts of the Assembly are printed, to wit, that commconly known as long primer type, or is written with pen andl ink in or on the policy." This law was passed in consequence of some insurance companies printing restrietive eon, ditions in their policies in type so small that they could not be easily read with the naked eye. One p)olicy exhibited to the Legislature had those conditions in pearl type. General B:'iks does not like to bQ mterviewed on politica. Colored men in Charleston are organizing Hamupton campaign clubs. The Burlington Jiawkeye says that "groonbackisin" is "nothing but brevet Communism." Mon.tgomery Blair has announo, ed hioself a candidate for Congress in the Sixth district of Maryland. It is reported that Congressman Schleicher, of Texas, believes that war with 3Xoxico is very probable. Dr. Stewart (Ropqblican), of the third XLinnosota district, hau decid-, ed to run for Congress in opposi, tion to lr. W. D. Washburn, the regular nominee of his party. There is an apportunity for effective work on the other side. The Charleston Journal of Com, meree s.tys : "If the South could leave the Union without firing a shot she would not do it. The Union now means to her profit and domination boyond her hopes and at the expenso of her bittorest foes, who havo boon blown up by their own torpedo." Providence fournal: "It is not the time when General Butler will be elected Governor of A.assachu-, setta by the aid of mobs, and al though he may be watching the labor turmoil with hope, we give him the credit of knowing that the ef2)rts of such a man as Kearney would only bo an injury to hie cause," Tho Democrats of Charleston have set an example for their party in South Carolina by resolving to p)ermnit colored citizens who voted for Hampton in 1876 to take an active part in their primary meet-, ings. The News and ()ourier siys r "Less than this it were un. just and unwise to concede. More than this could not safely be given. Speaking of the general result this fall, the Now Orleans Tinea chance for the Republicans to beat the vote of 1876, while the Demo crats have evory chanee. The char ges of fraud against Hayes, and the opon dislike to him in many Repub, liean States like Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, will tell seriously in the coining canvass." JOHY 4ND TUB PQST4AGO-sr42P, John was a boy who "lived out." Every weok he wrote home to his mother, lived on a small, rocky farm among the hills. One day John picked up an old envelope from the wood-box, and saw that the postago.stamp on it was not touched by the postmaster's stamp to show that it had done duty and was henceforth useless. "The post. master missed his aim, then." said John, "and loft the stamp as goo4 as now. I'll use it myself." Ho moistened it at the nose of the tea..kettle, and carefully pullsc4 the stamp of. "No," said conscience, "for that wvould be cheating. The stamp has been on the letter ; it ought not to carry another." "It can carry another," said yohn, "because, you see, there is no marIe to prove it worthless. The post' office will not know." "But you know," said conscience, "and that is enough. It is not honiest to use it a second time. It is a little matter, to be sure; but it is cheating. God looks for princi. pie. It is the quality of every action which He judges." $But no one will know it," sai4 John, faintly. ".No one /" eried conscience. "God will know it--that is enough, and He, you know, desires truth a4 the inward parte." "Yes," cried the beat part of John's character. "yes s it is cheat ing to use the postage stamp the seeond time, and I will not do it." John tore it in two and gave it to the winds.
