IT is a7spas that an effort will
be made in Delaware to defeat Sena
tor Bayard's re-election to the Son
ate in 1881. This is the sheerest
folly. Bayard is by far the biggest
part of Delaware, and Delaware is
known to the world only through
Bayard. Without hinu sho 'would
sink to the insignificance enjoyed by
Ithode Island..
Phonetic Spelling,
An exchange says :
Professor Knowlton, of San Fran.
cisco spells potato "Ghoughph
theightteeau," according to the
following rule : "Qh stands for p,
as you'll find from the last letters
in hiccough. Ough stands for o,
as in dough. Phth stands for t, as
in phthisis. Eigh stands for a, as
in neighbor. Tte stand for t, as in
gazette, and ean stands for o, as in
bean."
Now since gh stands for p and
also for f, as in cough, and for k,
as houg h, while kn stands for n, asi
in know, and nay spells e, ts in
quay, and ce is s, as In poultice,
and aux spells o, as in faux p a..,
and oise stands for is, as in tortoiso,
and ey is a, as in heyday, and you
spells n, we may be pardoned for
remarking that Ghreaughuaycec
auxr (hknauxllephthauxkn oise cy
groieyphth ghhreyyoud.
Honor to Whom Honor is Dae.
The Charleston Journal of (om
merce says : "Up to two years ago
the press of Carolina was silent upon
the wrongs of her people. Unaided,
however, the people made them,
selves heard all over this broad land,
and drove the usurpers from her
borders and into exile." The
Journal q' Commnerce is in error.
From the time that the "Ringed,
S ranked and Stripe .1" Conveatikn
sat in Charleston to the present,
the press of South Carolina has never
failed to depict the enormities of
Radical misrule, and to denounce
the wrongs done to the people. An
examination into the files of the
leading city and country papers will
prove this. And it was the revela..
tion through the columns of the
press of the outrageous frauids per
petrated by the Radical regine that
incited the people to rise in their
majesty and work out their deliver -
ance. Not only this, but the press
<1 of the State attracted the attention
of the outside world to our con di
* tion. If the papers have not made
* any money in the past ten years, let
them at least not be deprived of wvhat
honor is due them.
Radicalism Redivivus.
Radlcalism is inalively state of
convalescence in Charleston. The
recent reports in the papers smack
of old times. Trhe hosts of the truly
loyal are divided between Mackey
and Bowen and Taft and one or two
colored men. Mackey and Taft are
competing for Congress, and Mackey
attacks Taft on the ground that tihe
latter offered in the Senate a series
of resolutions complimenting Gov--'
ernor Hiampton. This must be
pleasant reading to those who im..t
agine that a Radical has any sense'
of gratitude, and that the want of
opposition to Hampton arises from
any other cause than a conscious
ness of its utter futility. A conm
~ti bination is on foot in Charleston,
headed by Delany, Aaron Logan
.and one or two others, to exclude
white Radicals from communtion
with the colored brother, and to
soueall the loaves and fishes for!
the sons of Ham. Thbey swallow
Hampton with apparent- gusto, bmt
do not evince any inolinration to
iticket. All this shows that the
~ RadIcal, are every whit as vindictive1
as as they were in 1870, and thamt
they have the shrewdness to make a
most insidious atthck, the only one
Ii offering any chance of success.
They-hope, by making no nomina.
tions fom' the State ticket, to lull the
Demodrats into fancied security,1
and in this way to capture the State
Legislature. ' Seventeen members
from Charleston would be a goodl
step in this direction. That the
scheme will fail we are assured, but
it may succeed to the extent of flu
curing a dangerous balance of pow
er in the lower houso.
There is grave cause for the ap
prehension that the Democrats are
becoming too mealy-mouthed and
tender,hoarted; that in looking at
the fifteen thousand colored voters
who oust theii' lots with decency,
they may forgot thu ninety thuts,
and who virulently opp,sed all
reform and died in the last ditch,
sullen and defiant and busotted,
t'inging to Chamberlain and his
thieves as long as they were lefty
and who are now praying for the
day when African supremacy, With
all its attendant crimes, may be
again foisted on the State. The
leopard cannot change his spots,
the malignant Radical can never be
converted.
We are opposed to drawing the
race issue, as unadvisablo and por
haps productive of eoriu3 intos
tine disturbances, but there is gravo
doubt whether the position of the
Edgeteld Democracy is not prefera
bl1 to the stand taken by the e. -
tromists on the other side, who, at
this late day, speak of fusion. 1)is.,
tinction must be drawn so closelv
between Democracy and ladivtalbsI
that the limit between them shar;ll bo
a dead line fatal to the p->litical life
of at y who crosses over. Wtierever
Radicalisn raises it:; head, it 6hoult1
be resolutely attacked, and every}
possible moans of dlefeatiig it should
be exhausted. The people Will not
h)0 deceived by ladical hurr:ihs for
lHamupton. The Riical;m do not. mea
what they a-ty. They inwardly detest
Hampton and the De;mocrats for
putting a stop to their pludering,
but they yell for him lustily :,s a
a mask to conceal their a1ssaults 01)
the Democrat.ie citadol In 'what
ever county, or nulder wh.ttever
leaders the R.dicals show lift', they
should be remorslessly crushed
out. Charleston especially should
see to this matter at once.
