Mr. WVihiiams says that the Rev.
13. F. Porter, the President of the
]4xodus Association, assured Col
lector Bldwin at Char.leston that
he "knew" Curtis was c uahfiedl to
act as ship's physician. .This agrees
with our own infornyation on the
subject. C'ollector Baldwin ivas
wilfully and deliberately misled.
In truth, in the words of Mr.
Williams, this man Curtis "kno\ys
about as much about medicine as a
street-car' mule.". More mischievous
thna mule, Curtis administered
medicines of the natutre and probyw
ble affects of which 1?e knmw
nothing. To a poor creature whq
had mlleasle-, Curtis administered,
in the course of one morning,
"Coffee, with an infusion of ginger, a
Dover's powder and Friar's Balsam."
She died the same day. Caloinel
and jalmap were the favorite pre
scriptions, and it soon bpcame
necessary for Capt Holmes to pro
hibi1 any further experimenting by
Dr. Curtis. The emigrants had
been assured by the managers of
the Association that a physician
from W\ac>hington would acco;npany
the A .:or. Upon this they relied.
Not only was there no physician
but thero wore no such nedical
stores as good slpirits and wines,
sago and arro\yrot. Vhen stimu
lants were needed for the sick, thq
slender privato stores of Capt.
lHohuns and Mr. Williams wpre re
sorted to. With a short allowance
of water, with food of poor quality,
and without a physician, it is not
strango that the death roll should
have been so large. It stands thus:
