A CLEnICAL CANDIDATE.-A Con -
gregational church in Connecticut,
not far east of New Haven, is suffer
ing for the want of a pastor, but is
exceedingly difficult to please. The
salar'y was $1,000, but has been
reduced to $800. For over a year
this church has been engaged in
the business of hearing candidates,
and has had a variety, principally
of young men. One of these young
men, not exactly pleasing yet not
displeasing tihe poplle, was invited
to preach a second time and then a
third. After his third Sunday of
service he asked the committee if it
was probable that he would be
asked again. They told him they
could not tell. "Then,'' said he,
"I guess I will have to keep on
candidating somewhere else. This
is tile seventy-first time I have
preached as a candidate, and I'm
getting used to it.,
