No further suffering or death is re ported. We shall await with- inter est the receipt of Mr. Williams' letter. He is a graphic writer and will have an abundance of material to draw from. Tus NEW YORK Jierald roDorts among the arrivals at Paris that of Messrs. W. A.. Clark and John '1'. Sloan, members of the Ciohrmbia bar, who are- doing the Exposition. They are registered at . the Hotel Dominici. We shall be pleased to meet Mr. Jean S. Le'Aune on his return and hear how they do things in Paree. WE MAY BE permitted to express a hope that the good people of Chester will send Mr. J. J. Hemp hill back to the Legislature. He is a gentleman of ability, integrity and vim, and will do the county credit. He made a mark for him self last year. The only objection is that he is a bachelor, and Gov.. ernor Hampton says no bachelors must be sent to the Legislature. He must at least make an effort an to have- his disabilities in this respect removed. THE NORTHERN papers are reviv ing the story of the assassination of Lincoln. The theory of niany of Booth's friend's is that while he was in a conspiracy to abduct Mr. Lincoln and bring him acrt-ss the line, the idea of assassination never entered his head until the day the crime was perpotrated. What good can be accomplished by a re-opening of the old story doos not appear. It is surmised that a new play founded on this incident will soon be produced, and that this is the way of advertising it. The Next Congress. Considering that the Radicals assert that the salvation of the nation depends on a Repnblican House of Representatives in Wash ington next year, the outlook for a realization of their hopes is not promising. The organs puff and blow a great deal, buat the result is encouraging.. Oregon gave them a very black eye, and they will receive several more bruises when the campaign fairly opens. The Newv York Herald, which is about the nearest approach to an im partial paper in the United States, thus sums up the Radical case : When the nominations have been made and the canvass is fairly opened it will be generally felt that the Congressional elections this year are of unusual importance. They will determine the question whether the govermnent is to be substantially under Democratic control after the 4th of March. A Democratic majority in the Senate after that date is already assured, and if the party should hold its p resent control of the House the Republican Executive will be pow-. erless. A Congress Democratic in both branches has not existed since 1860, and it will be quite a novel thing, after the lapse of nineteen most eventful years, to find that body again in the bands of the Demoerate, with the Republicans powerless-except in the very few measures which President Hayes may think it his duty to veto. We can hardly see a possibility of the- Republicans recovering the House of Representatives which. they lost in the elections of 1874. The whole drift of political ten dencies is against them. The President they elected . two years ago has not proved pop)ular even in his own party, and although~ the quarrel is understood to have been! hushed the Republicans can feel no~ enthusiasm for a chief whom their organs have been accustomed to belittle and deride. The people at large favor economy ; and most of the extravagant legislation of , the late session was the work of the Repub~lican Senate, which repressed 4he-'frugal tendencies of the Demo-. eratie House. Tlte Potter hI~vesti gation may not have'. mnuch effect; but its.effect, so far as it has any, will not be for the -advantage of the Repnbligan'party. There are reasbns quite apart .from tb~ ltiggtiisues raised be. tweei the two parties wihy the Democrats seem to btive the bett er Chlance. F'i:": , l.consider't 'It! S mtt . Ini a few of the 1'th., 1 lte. there was still atl Relio: '!)ne zatiol two years ago, itd e;:I Republican members were elected to Congress. The le)ublicio11:. will lose all or mo.t these, and it ii diflicult to see where they are to gain a ueml)er in all the Soutlie in States. Consider California. T'hrcu of the four present members from that State are Republicans but owing to the CoIInItnuist upbe tval they are likely to be repl:c:ed by Kearnevites. Coisider In lima, where the los.s of Senator .luit,n must greatly weakeli the p:rty.. Ini Newu York the Re~pulienntis ar.e more likely to lose than to g1ain na ilaers because their inllwnce will be chiefly expended in ebi Oosi!~ hing e bers of the Asseilbly with a view to re-elect Senator Counkling. In Ohio, Mr. Hayes' own State, his party cannot expect to be so stron Its it was two years ago inl the Ist flush of his )opulitrity after his nondniiationi for lthe 1Presid'ner.
