ROBERT MORRIS.
The new silver certificates bear
upon the left end the portrait of
Robert Morris. We are prone to
forget the deeds of the heroes who
were instrumental in founding the
liberal government under which
we live. Robert Morris was a poor
bank-clerk in Philadelphia in colo
nial times, but went into business
with his employer's son on the re
tirement of the principal. He rose
to eminence as A financier, and his
was the strongest commercial house
in America when the Revolution
broke out. He opposed the stamp-act
and was elected to Congress in 1775.
On the first of July, 1776, he voted
against the Declaration of Inde,
pendence, declai ing it premature,
but when the great instrument was
adopted he signed it with the rest,
and his signature is a bold evidence
of sincerity. He did more for the
purveyance of the army in its days
of direful distress than the Govern.
mnent ttself. In 1780, through his
management, 3,000,000 rationus and
300 hogsheads of rumn were sent to
the army. In 1781, he furnished
the army with soveral thousand
barrels of flour. This great man
did not cease his exertions for the
benefit of the Revolutiou cause till
liberty was secured. When Wash-~
ington offered him the post of
scretary of the treasury, he declined
in favor of Alexander Hamilton. It
is a mournful page in our history
that Robert Morris, having lost his
fortune in his old age, was confined
in prison for debt, and actually died
in poverty. The placing of his large,
honest face on the silver certificate
is some recognition of his services
to our country in its early days of
financial distress.
LOSING A I3UTTON.-Walter Scott
tells a story of a boy who was with
him in school, who always stood at
the head of his class. It was the
custom of the scholars to change
places in their classes, according to
failure or success in recitation ; but
though Walter was number two,'he
could not get to be head, because
this boy never missed. But Walter
noticed that he had a habit, 'vhen
puzzled by hard question, of twirling
a button on his jacket, and this
seemed to help him to think out a
right .miswer. Walter, more through
muischief than any worse motive,
cut off the button slyly one day, to
see if that would make any differ
ence. The lesson was a spelling
lesson, and several boys at t.he foot
missed a hard word. It came round
to the head. The boy instinctively
put his hand to the button. It was
gone. He looked down to find it,
grew confused, missed the word,
and Walter went above him. The
boy never got to the head again,
seemed to lose his ambition, settled
down into a second--rate scholar, and
never accomplished .mneb in ;1.ife.
Walter Scott declared that he often
suffered sharp: remorse at the
thought that he possibly spoiled. the
boy for school sid for lfe by cutting
off the button that had .done such
good service.

There is a curious story about some native
wines which are extensively advertised nowa
days, and have only recently been put upon
the market. Dr. Underhill, the well-known
ape-grower of Cretan Point, died in 187r.

views of such extreme kind, that they were
unwilling to allow the stock of wvines th en on
hand to be sold or any more to be made.
The grapes have sometimes been sent to
mnarket, and sometimes left to decay upon
the vines. It Is only nowv that the other heirs
have succeeded In arranging for a settlement
of the estate and the sale of the wines on
hand. A meng these is a wine of the vintage
of 1864, described as a "Sweet Union Port,'
but suggesting the Imperiai Tokay more
than any other European wine, and being
wholly unlike any other wine of American
growth. Its purity, age and mellowness are
rmrae,and both physicians and wine
ranciers have a special interest In it as the
oldest native wine now accessible In any con
siderable quantity. The whole stock Is In ihe
hands of the well-known wholesale grocery
