from James W. i'Elnar, E.q, a

first of the present month.
STATE CONSTABLE.-Mr. G. A.
White has been appointed Deputy
State Constable for Fai field comi
-ty. Mr. White possesses all the
qualifications needed to fit him for
this responsible position, an.l he
will make an excellent officer.
By reference to the notice in
another column, it will be seen that
the hour for the assembling of the
Democratic County Convention, on
the 15th irst., has been changed
from eleven o'clock to half-past
twelve. This will be much more
convenient for the delegates.
THE MoisE LIGHT ARTILLERY --Tlis
company has received promises from
General Moise of two guns as soon
as they can possibly be obtained In
the meantime the Adjutant -General
suggests that the company be drilled
as infantry. We trust General
Moise may soon be able to furnish
the needed cannon. The comnpany
organized with the special view
of having an artillery corps, andI it
w ~ ould be unfortunate should they
have oither to disb.md or to turn
themselves into infantry.
AROUND TowN.-An abnd~an-'e of
rain-and the farmer anid gaLrden1er
are happy.
The fellowv who originated the fire
on Thursday night bad no scarcity
V of matches.
There are about ten dozen too
n. n any worthless dogs in town. Let
us get rid of themI.
The nearer court -wveek approach
es the more religions the prisoners
in jail become.
Two suspicious looking characters
have been nosing around for a day
otwo. Keep a sharp lookout for
hem.
Te firemen, both white and
promptress to the alarm of fire on
'Thursday night.
A lively skirmish between two
auvenile darkies took place up town
yesterday B3oth were pretty mud
dywhen they were separated.
S*.EN4TERTAIN4MENT FOR -TUE HAMPTON
~,thLE GtJARD.-The ladies of Long.
Stwn and Ridgeway 'will give an
4, ter'tainment at the latter place
a o next Thursday evening, to aid
~he Hampton Rifle Guard in proc.
~ uring their much- needed uniforms.
~Ihe citizens of Winnsboro, and all
WonI~i' friendly to the organization,
~oordially invited to attend. The
~a offered will be sold at prices
onlylow. The uniforms of
~ ,urd are now in the. hands of
h~o,and bt a smnall amount
i ed4, t4 complete ,the
hard times. We sincerely trust
that the corps may soon, be in
complete military trini. They are
an excellent body of m on, finely
oillceoredt, and will do honor to their
county and their Sttto.
AN INCEND)i%AtY It'ti?.-The alarni
of tire was sounded about hailf-past
one o'clock on Friday morning, and
was caused by the slight burning
of the law office of Jno. J. Neil,
Esq., just in roar of the court
house. Policeman Jenkins. on
duty at the tille, was attracted to
the pl.aco by the glare, anid at onceo
sounded the alarm. Tilo firemen
protml)tiy turned out in force, and
the lire wats soon extingnished.
But little damIage was done to the
office, only a s:n:uil hole boing hilrnt
in the floor, and the walls bein'
considerably smokod. 'T'hero c.0n
be no doubt that the lire was in
cendiary. M\Iatches were found
near the ofnico door, and it could be
plair,ly soon that kerosene oil had
been poured on the floor through
a hole in the door. The oil was
not entirely burnt out when the
flames were extinguished. This is
the second attempt to destroy
property on Law Range-the first
being the recent entry of the coun
ty auditor's offico and the partial
abstraction and destruction of
valuable papers. The authorities
and people generally should keep a
sharp lookout, with a view to the
detection and swift punishment of
the parties engaged in these crimes.
