T~ rb - 1 Vie Massu And Mrlt WINNSBORO. S. 0. Itursday, May 9, 1878. . MEANS DATI1, EDITOB. JNo N. RZYNOLDs, Ass001AT8 EDIon. AtEEN OUNTY re.elects Col. Croft chairman, declares for the present State ticket and retains the system of convention nominations. THE.wAnoE CITIES Of the North are in a state of excitement in conse., quence of a general rally of the so gialists or communists. In some of the cities members of these societies drill openly and threaten violence to capital. They also propose to gain control of legislation. In Cali fornia the Republicans and Demo orats are combining against the oommunists. THE COURT OF CLAIMs, to consider the validity of the public debt, is now sitting in Columbia. a,.dgei Aldrich will preside. The co art consists of himself and Judges Thomson and Hudson. The State will be represented by Attorney, General Youmans and Messrs. Meetze and Y. J. Pope ; the credi tors by Col. C. H. Simonton, F. J. Ma:well and others. AS USUAL, THE GRAND JURY of Or angeburg county has been declared illegal, and Judge Mackey has ordered a test case to see whother the jury commissioner or the clerk of court is responsible-whoever is in default being held personally lia ble for the mileage and per diem of the jurors illegally drawn. Some decisive action should be taken in the matter, as Orangoburg has had but one jury in four years, So PAOSAnD HAS AT last obtained recognition from Mr. Hayes. This defunct governor went back on the president pretty severely several months ago, denouncing him in State conventions and at other places. Since that he has vainly hung.around Washington in quest of offide. But the FlQrida disclo sures, t'gether with the bromiso that still richer revelations are to come from Louisiana, appear to have awakened the defceto president to a sense of his duty to the disaffected carpet-baggers. Mr. Packard has been nominated as consul to Liver" pool. This appointment, made on the. very day on which it was an nounced. that a motion wvould be introduced in the house for an in-. vestigationi of the presidential ele'.. tion, . does not argue woll for i Hayes' back-bone. It is too trains parenit as a dodge to get good witnesses across the wvater. TBs CONFEDERATE 1%XONUMENT. The ladies throughout the State, and partiejilarly those of the Monumoni tal Association of Columbia, who have lien working wvith zeal and energy for so.miany years to erect a momiment to the memory of the Conie, dfrate dead, are very anxious to flhilsh the. good work before the close of the presenbt year. In order -to do this they have asked for' a little more help from each counlty, and have appointed an agent to solicit. contrihutions. A few years - ago the sinall sum,. of towen.ty-Svo cents:f.rom each person: was called for, and quite a handsome- collection was made up. in- that way. It is now ptoposedl to repeat the twenty.. Avye centsicollection, and to place a oash-box- in several of the stores in Winnsboro.' to' receive the same. From, an'y one desiring to give more. 4htaxy tw enty-flye cents, of course it' wll! be-thankfulleceived. An Aot ya. passed byr the last Legislature, eriiig leave to place the monument in.the tate-House grounds at Columbia, and surely every atriot shonld be anxious to see It there, All contributions sent to Mrs.4 . MYaeurtson, ageint fox' Fairfild, *il1 be pro nptly forward ed to t1s treasurer at.Cojumbia, The ?rlnary Systeni, gonsidesebM opposition jgIrF. estd n od4 o convention manipulation, and it ro. quires far greater sagacity and strength to control-a majority of the people than to manage a majority in a convention. The objection that the primary system would lead to interminable elections is met by the provision that at the second elec tion only the two highest candidates for any office at the first election shall be balloted for. This imposes two elections as the extreme limit. The alleged crime of cutting off the weaker candidates by the primary system is not near so outrageous as the slaying of the strongest candi dates before a convention by bring ing in a (lark horso. The primary election suffers no one to "lie low" until the candidates have cut each other's throats. Any one wishing to succeed, must put his best foot foremost from tho beginning, in order to be one of the highest two, between whom the people are to choose. The objection to the novel ty of this dangerous innovation is urged by those who are unaware that the primary system has been adopted in many States as the dernier ressort for preserving the purity of party. In Fairflield, a number of thf best citizens who refused previously to enter the clubs now declare th.t6 all scruples are removed by the adoption of tho primary system. They are willing to trust the judgment of ti mjority of the Democrats, but they would not tio to the notion of a convention. As to the objection to the pleodge, an organization is not worth having unless it can wield its members in a solid body. Otherwise no one one would waste time in seeking a nomination from it. There Is a curious story about some native wines which are extensively advertised nowa days, and have-only recently been put upon the market. Dr. (Juderhill, the vell-known grape-grower of Croton Point, dit d in 187r. Some of his heirs entertained temperance views of-such extreme kind, that they wcre unwilling to allow the stock of wines then on hand to be sold or any more to be made. The grapes have- sometimes been sent to market, and sometimes left to decay upon the vines. It is only now that the other heirs have succeeded In arranging for a settlement of the estate and the sale of the wines on hand. Atuiong these is a wine of the vintage of 1861, described as a "Sweet Union Port,' but suggesting the Imperial Tokay more than any other European wine, and being wholly unlike any other wine of American growth. Its puritv, age and mellowness are remarkable, and hoth physicians and wine fanciers have a special interest in it as the oldest native wine now accessible in any con siderable quantity. 'The whole stock is~in the hands of the well-known wholesale grocery house of the '1'hurbcrs,--N, Y. Tribune, Nov. J9, z17. The above speaks for itself, but we would add that this is the pure juice of the grape, neither :Irugged, liquored nor walercd ; that it has been ripened and mellowed by age, and for medicinal or sacranental purposes it is unsurpassed. It can be obtained from most of the leading Druggists throughout the United States, and at wholesale from the undersigned,- who -vill forward descriptive pamphlet, free-of charge, on application. R IOIRD AN & DA WtS'ON, Prorlietor9, March 3U-Li CIIAILESTON, S. O. Ayer's Hair Vigor, For restoring Gray Hair to its natural Vitality and Color. A dressing which is at once agree. able, healthy, and effectual for preserv ing the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color, with the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can re store the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands atrophied and deenycd. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this ap)plication. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it wilL keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turninig gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those decleterious sub1. stances which mnake some prepara, tions dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desir able. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cam brie, and yet lasts long on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. PREPARED BT Dr. i. C.
