TuE P. I. man of the Now York
Herald is unhappy because all
Southern orators on Memorial Da.y
express the cQnvictiont iApt the
f. South ought to have boon victorious.
Did ho over know any one who
having got a trashing did not
believe to th:m end of time that he
ought to haye licked ? .Is that
treason?
:r WHEN THE confessions Of McLin
and Dennis, in reference to the
rauds in Florida, wore first made
known, they wore troatedc very
lightly in high circles, and the Now
York herald especially pooh-poohod
them contemptuously as too late.
But the more the matter is stirred
the bigger it gets. It will not
down at sny ono'e bidding, Indi
cations are that Congress will bo
compelled to take cognizanco of it,
and appoint a committeo of investi
gation. Sill richer developments
from Louisiana are promised. The
cloud is not larger than a man's
hand now, but wLither it will
spread, none can forotell.
SEORETARY KEY is also happy as
a clam at high tide water over the
recent Florida developments. Jo
knew all along that Tilden had
carried Florida amd said so. But
Hayes put him in his cabinet, and he
proposes to stick tero. Ho cannot
believe that o--Goveruor Noves
aided and abetted McLin in his
frauds. Furthermore McLin and
,Dennis are such grand rascals ho
does not believe a word they say.
And yet Mr. Key, Democrat as he
is, forget, that the words of McLin
and Dennis woro good enough to
believe when they said, a year ago,
that Florida had gone for I1ayes.
Were they more trustworthy when
lying than they are now that they
tell the truth ? Resides who in the
world is better evidence that
McLin stole the State than McLin
himself l Mr. Key is entirely too
happy. We fear it is his salary,
not his pressident that he intends
to stick to.
The Solid South,
Alluding to the ep)ort that the
Northern Radicalis intend sending
some of their best orators down
South during the comning campaign,
especially in those districts whore
they believe there should be Rc
publican majorities, the Augusta
Chronicle and Constitutionalist
* manifests much joy of spirit, and
calla for B3oss Shephard anmd )3ab
cock and Belknap and Blaiuoe and
Credit Mobilier Colfax and .DeQalyer
Oarfield, and the accomplices of the
Florida and Louisiana Returning
Boards and all the Christian states.
men who lead the Republican party
~nd fitly illustrate its principles.
Our contemporary continues: "They
nay tro~vol .frorn R~ichmnond to
Oalvoston and make bloody,.shirt
speeches at every station with no
9ne to inolest or make thoem afraid.
They may canvass all the districts
in which they believe 'there should
V be Republican majorities.'. They
~nay organiz.e their party, distribu to
documents and le.vy .tribute on the
post-office and custom .house em
ployes. They may stay until -they
are tired of bunking at the .Solid
South, and witen they get tlu-ough
the people will eleot a Democratic
Congressman -in every Southern
district but two."

tlioloss England is very unoasy for
her shipping, and she inay strike
a blow at an early d:ay to prevent
Russia from p'rfcting her schono.
'ur:key is now said to be holding
aloof from Russia. She refuses to
surrender several forts, on the plea
that Russia has not fulfilled her
part of the treaty of San Stephano.
She has an army of sovonty thou

Unwarranted Charges.
A writer in the E:cjgofield Ador
tiser, whose zeal outreuchos hi-9
ktnowledge, recently severely criti
cised the oflicial courso of Superin
tendent Thompsoni and Secretary
Sims, than whom no more capable
or zealous officers can be found in
the State. Fault was found with
the former because the school
money belonging to Edgefield had
not been apportioned out among the
townships according to the views of
tho correspondent. Had he ex
amined the law he would have seen
that the State Superintendent
merely apportioned the money
among the counties, the re-appor
tionncnt among the townships in
oacl county being exclusively the
province of the school commissioner
whose duties in the prenises ore
,'ea'rly defined. The State Super.
intendent has no more to do with
that matter than with the length of
the Legislative sessions or the ee
tion of judgea
The complaint urged against
Secretary Sims is that besides re
ceiving a salary ho pockets three
dollars and a half for every conmis
sion issued,.bejles fees for other
duties. A reference to the law
plainly shows that all fees collected
by the secretary of Sttto are to
b.o turned into the treasury. This
provisio y has been strictly obeyed
by the secretary. Tho salary, which
lie fully eams, is all the money he
r.eceives. Thus the nccnsations
against both gentlonon fall tq thm
ground.
THE TE L EPIHONE.
There is no account extant of
howv the telephone acts when under
fire. The destruction of the Pr'e
Prss~ buildings gave the little in
strume.nt a liery ordeal to pass
through. The telephone in the
edi itor-i roomsa comminunicatcs with
the residence of the managing
editor, Win. E. Quiinhy, No. 777,
JTefferson avoenne, a mile and a half
from then newspaper oflice. WVhen
the fire struckc the edi torijal rooni,
the bell at Mr. Qninby's residlene
began to ring violently. As the
fire ineased in intensity the ring.
ing of the bell became more imupo,
tuons, pealing in gusts as the fire
seemed to surge around the comn
p)anion bell in the buriining building.
It was an embodiment of Poe's
lines on "The Bells" where the
rising and tho quelling of the fire
could lie calculated by the rising
and the falling of thme anger of the
bella. A t last the claime- of the
telephonic bell became unabearable
to those in the room and the bell
was muffled with cotton which part
ly stopped the alarm. But here the
strangest p)art of the telephone's
action comes in. From the speak
inst tnhe, (a-ne the roar of the fire,
and it wvould seem that the swish of
the water from the enginor and the
poui'ing of the floods from the roof
could be plainly heard, The crack
ling of the burning timbers and at
danet the, crash of floors and falling
par'titions came and every sound of
the conflagration in all its infioetions
weore faithfully reprodueed, and the
sudden stoppage of all sound
showed that communication was
broken and the .voice of the won
derful instrument stilled by thme
scorching flames.-JDetroi4 Pree
