THE INVENTORC OF 0.AN IJGiiTS.
The inventor of gas lights is said
to have been a Frenchmnan, Phillipno
Lo Bon, an engineer of roads and
bridges, who, in 1772, adopted the
idea of using, for the purposo5 of
illuimnation, the gases distilled
during the combustion of wood. HoI
labored for a long time in the at
tempt to perfect his crudlo inven
tion, and it was niot till 1799 that he
confided his discovory' to the insti
tutte. Ini September, 1800, lhe took
out a patent, and in 1800 he pub
lishied a memorial containing thne re
sult of his researches. Lo Bonl comn
monoed by distilling wood, in ordler
to obtain from it gas, oil, pitch anid
pyro-ligneous acid ; but his work
indicated the possibility of obtining
gas by distillation from fatty or
oily substancos. From 1799 to
1902, Lo Bon made numlerous ex~
p erimoents. Hoe established at Havre
his first thermo-.lamnps ; but the gas
which he obtained being at mixturc
of carburetted hydrogen anid oxide
of carbon, but imperfectly froed from
its impurities, gave onlly a feeble
light and involved ani insup)por'table
odor, and the result was that but1
little favor was shown to the noew
discovery ; the inventor eventually
died, ruind b)y his experiments.
The English 2001n put inl practice
the crude ideas of to Boiu. In 1804,
one Winsor patented and claimed
the crodit of inventing the pr1ocess
of lighting by gas ; in 1805, several
shops in Birmingham wore illumni,
nated by the proc ess of Winsor and
Murdook ; among those who used
this now light was Watt, the inven
tor, the steam engine. In 1816 the
first use was made of gas in London,
and it was not until 1818 that this
invention, of really French origin,
was applied in 'France

There is a curious story about some native
wines which are extensively advertised nowa
days, and have only recently been put upots
the market. Dr. Underhill, the well-knowin
grape-grower of Croton Point, died in 187r.
some of his heirs entertained temperance
views of such extreme kind, that they were
unwilling to allow the stock of wines then on
hand to be sold or any more to be made.
The grapes have sometimes been sent to
market, and sometimes left to decay upon
the vines. It is only now that the other heirs
have succeeded in arranging for a settlement
of the estate and the sale of the wines otn
hand. Among these is a wine of the vintage
of 18641, described as a "Sweet Union Port,"
but suggesting the Imperial '[okay more
than any other European wine, and being
wholly unlike any other wine of American
growth. Its purity, age and mellowness are
remarl-nble, and both physicians and wine
fanciers have a special interest in it as the
oldest native wine now accessible in any con
siderable quantity. The whole stock is in the
hands of the well-known wholesale grocery
house of the Thurbers.-N. Y. Tribune,
