It is not generally known that, Mr. Stephens was, mUch talked of for President of the Confederato States, and still less, that he caimte much nearer being President of the United States. In 1860 the Demo cratic party could have elected whom tho pleased if the party had remained united. When Stephen A. Douglass witnessed the opplosition to himself at Charleston, he proposed to defeat the Yancey malcontents and Brockeuridge men by giving way to Stephens, on whom there could be no hopeful division of the South, and whose Union sentiments would carry the North. PrEPAINO 'rO ' INn Ur.-At a lite meeting of the Building and Loan Association of Chester, action was taken looking to a winding up of the institution. When tines were better, it snited then mectmbers very well to have some1 plaice to deposit their monthly savings. Now that the times are fearfully dull and(i hard, caursing~ a disaippeanmace of their accustomed savings, the mem bers find it a matter of extreme difficu4ty to meet their lmonthly dues. It is a burden of which they are ext remely anxio)us to be relieved The Association,. illstead of bienefi t ing thle p)oor man as wais intended, is doing him, great in jury. It is quite probable that some plan will be devised, by thle committee ro. cently appointed, for winding up the Association satisfactorily to all the members. At tile anlnual meet ing, on the 1st Monday in May, tile report of tile commuitten will be submitted.-Corw. Y orkville .En gutrer. Tihis Sarsaparilla is a combination of vegetable alteratives--St illingia,Man drake,Y ellow Dock-with the lodides of Potassium and Iron, and is the mnol't elicacious medicine yet known for the diseases it is intended to cure. Its ingredients are so skilfully combined that the full alterative effect of each is assured, and while it is so mild as to be hatnless even to children, it is still so effectual as to purge out from the system those inpurities and corruptions whiclr develop into loathsome disease. Tle r c";ut ation it enjoys is derived from its cum, and the confidence which promiin:int physicians all over the country repose in it proves their experience of its usefulness. Certificates attesting its virtues have accumulated, and are con stantly being received, and as many of these cases are publicly known they furnish convincing evidence o the superiority of this Sarsaparilla over' e'very other alterative medicine. So generalliy is its superiority to any other nmedicine known that we ned do no mnore than to assure the public that the best qualities it has ever p)ossessed are strictly mnaintained. ' There is a curious story about me native wines which arc extensively advertised nowa days, and have only recently been put upon the market. Dr. Un derhill,* the well-ktiown grape-grower of Croton Point, died in 1871. Siome of h is heirs entertained temperance views of such extreme ind, that they were unwilling to allow the stock of wvines then ott hand to be sold or any more to be made. The grapes have sometimes been sent to market, and sometimes left to decay upont the vines. It Is only now that'the other helrs have succeeded in arranging for a settlement of the estate and thie sale of the wines on hand. Amon g these Is a wine of the vintage of x864', described as a " Sweet Union Port," but suggesting the Imperial Tokay more than any other Eutopean wine, an dbeing wvholly unlike nny other wine of American growth. Its purity, age anad mellowness are remarkable, and both physicians and wine fanciers have a special interest in It as the oldest native wine now accessible in any con siderable qunantity. The whole stock is In the hands of the wvellI-known wholesale gocery house of the Thurbers.-N, Y. r#ax, The above speaks for Itself, but we would add that this is the pure juice of the grape, neither drugged, liguored nor watered; that it has been ripened and 'mellowed by agar ancf for medicinal or sacramental purposes it is unsurpassed. It can be obtained from niose of the leading Druggists throughout the United States, and at wholesale from tbe undersigned, who will forwvard descriptive pamphlet, free of charge, on application.
