THE MENNONITEs IN Oiio.-A Cu rious church caao has just como be fore the courts of Ohio, in which a body of Mennonites, known as the church of God is defendant and one of its ex-monbers the plaintiff. The latter, one Joseph Lichby, was placed by the church in 1876 under the "ban of avoidance," a form of disciipline which required the re Inainmg members to shun him until be might repent and be again re ceived into the communion. This obligation extended to his wife. She was threatened with excommunica.. tion from the church and the oternal loss of her soul in caso she failed to observe it. Between her husb.mnd and the church she chose the latter. In the courts Lichby sued for $10, 000 for the alienation of his wife's affections. The church, not believ ing in lawyers made t heir own de - fence, and produced as their sole law-book the Bible. f'rom which they read in parts from Numbers to Revelatign. Simon Menno, of' Hol land, who lived in the sixteenth century, was their comnentator. By the Bible they sought to justify their course, and under a ploa of ro - ligious tolerance guaranteed by the Constitution, claimed a verdict in their favor. The jury gave Lichby a verdict for $2,500. NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE.-The Il lustrated London New has pub lished over 40,000 separate pictures since it was founded in 1849.
