Views Upon Popular Education.

As Uncle Remus came up White
hall street yesterday he met a little
colored boy carrying a slate and
a number of books. Some words
passed between them, but their ex
act purport will probably never be
known. They were unpleasant, for
the attention of a wandering police
man was called to the matter by
hearing the old man bawl out :
"Don't you come foolin' longer me,
nigger. Youer flippin' yo' sass at
do wrong color. You'k'n go roun'
here an' sass dese white people, an'
maybe dey'll stan' it, but w'on you
come a slingin' yo' jaw at a man w'at
wuz gray w'on de fahmin' days gin
out, yo' better go an' git yo' hide
greazed."
"What's the matter, old man ?"
asked a sympathizing policeman.
"Nothin', boss 'crp'in I ain't
gwinter hev no nigger chillun a
hoopin' an a hollerin' at me w'en
I'm gwine 'long 'do streets."
"Oh, well-school children-you
know how they are."
"Dat's w'at make I say w'at I duz.

If nature mndo no provision for
the removal of floating wreck from
the surface of the .ocean, dangers of
navigation would increase in a fear
fuil ratio ; floating hulls, spara and
masts would soon cover the sea. To0
* effect the removal of floating wood
three species of small marine ani
mals play a most important part.
Suppose we have a ship's spar drift
ing down upon the waves. A small
creature, known as the barnacle,
soon discovers it and attaches itself
thereto, and as these little creatures
* exist in immense numbers, the tim
ber' speedily becomes covered with
thorm. On examining them at this
stage we shall find that they are
attached to the timber by means of
a tube not unlike the windpipe of~ a
chicken, this tube being filled with
a liquid, whilst from the shell pro
truues a series of twenty-four hairy
claws or tentacles. Each joint of
the latter is arched, and furnished
with rows of hair on its concave side
so much like feathers that it is prow
bably from their appearance that the
first idea of the barnacle goose was
derived. The effeot of t.he barnacle
is to sink the log. When in mid
water or at the bottom it is attacked
and riddled through by two little
wood-boring worms, the pholas
and the toiredo. The tereclo navalia,
or calamitae navtum, works its way
through hard planks, and lines the
tunnel as it goes with a hard, ivory
like shell. Thus, then, the barn,a
cles and wood worms unite to wvork
the destruction of wreckage ; for,'
borne dow, by the one, it is speedi..
ly riddled' by the others, until it
falls to pieces by the .action of the
waves and bedonjos lost.
