JIB WENT 11E'1HIND THE RETURNS.
Over one eye was a piece of stick
ing plaster as big as a street-car
ticket, and one lcg seemed to hesi
tate and hitch along as though a
grain or two of gravel had somehow
got into the knee joint and made
trouble and dissatisfaction. His
boots were as full of squeak as a
boarding house rocking chair, and
the hools wore hedging around and
trying to climb up and see what the
pantaloons were made of. His oyes
had a wandering, startled, half
frightened sort of look, and one of
them seemed inclined to set up an
observatory on its own account.
His nose had started out boldly
into tho world, but after slight
progress had thought better of it,
changed his mind and scooted for
home again. This movement had
aroused the curiosity of the chin,
and it sallied out resolutely to find
out how matters stood. When they
came within hailing distance, both
organs seemed to take alarm at the
hostile appearance of tho interven
ing chasm of a mouth, and halted
right where they were.
The man was very polito though
awkwardly so, and pulled off his
napless, rusty stove-pipe hat, with
a springy, nervous movement, the
instant he crossed tho door-sill, and
came forward with a crouching,
hesitating air, seemingly fearful
that his intrusion might be unwar
ranted. Ho came to a full stop
with a bow that made his ribs rattle,
and asked with a voice afraid to
como out all at once:
"Is-the-editor-in ?"
He was.
"Bo-you-he ?"
Such was the case.
By this time the man's voice had
pretty much all got together, and
poured out with confidence
"No print is shut up from you.
You're better acquainted with words
than I am with my own relations.
They can't fool you. The minute
you clap your eyes on 'em you can
tell 'em by mame, can't you ? Thel1y
don't get start of you muchel, no
matter if they're as big as a hog
blanket, (10 they 7"
Nary time thcy didn't.
"Then I'm in the right shop, and
needn't go any furder'. I want
you to help me out of a little mess.
As we was sayin', you cant be fooled
by anything in the word business.
For instance, a word that hadn't no
business in a ver~se couldn't ring in
on you, could it ? You'd collar it at
sight an' pitch it out, an chuck in
the right one, wouldnt you ?"
Most likely.
"Ahi-hahi ! I thought so. Now
we're comin' to the scratch. You
see the trouble is just this, me nor
my ole woman neither one has much
book sense, but each one's got
their owvn idees, and we freeze to
'em tighthor'n wax. If she says a
thing's so, she'd lose every tooth in
her head afore she'd back water ; an'
as for me, I'm purty much Oin the
same stump. We've been maried
now risin' thirty yoar, and have
grown children, but there's one int
that we allus knock our heads
ogether on, an' its mlad() us heaps
o' trouble ; we've skrimmaged over
it year arter year, but we're no
nigher gittin' it settled atween our
two selves to-day nor we was the
first year we was jined. We've
wrangled and fussed, an' thrown up
one another's relations, an' over,.
hauled our1 failin's no cend o' times,
but no good ; I'm satisfied nOwy we
can never settle it that way, an' as
we're both old, an' there's
no tellin' when one or t'oth.er
might drop0I off, I thought aIs
it would be a mighty sighit o'
satisfaction to knowv afore that tigno
comes who's been right about iL ll
this while, ain't it po1ped into my
head that we'd leave it to an umpire,
an' so git sl1ut of it for good ; an'
so after talkhn' it over last night,
pro an' con, we've both elected you,
* and my business here now is to get
your jedgment on the question.
An' what we want to know is, which
is right 'thorn molasses,' or 'those
molasses.'''
When the old man received the
mortifying information' that they
had oth eon in a:fog,a and neither
was right, he said it would be dlowln
right purgatory for him to go home
with that decision, and tho only
chance for peace on earth would be
for him to stand by "Lhose molasses"
