ROoKY MOUNT I'rEMS.-Rochy
Mount is not "a city by the sea," but
a city by the waters of the "mighty"
Catawba, and was formerly the
home of the Semps, McCulloughs,
Kingaburys, Edwards and Barkleys.
We have neither a Wall Street nor
a "gold room," yet we have a 00mw
merci 1, financial and crop reporter
and a general news agent.
How would you like to take a
pool) at some things rare and curi
ous ? See that Conspicious hill.
That is '-Drummer's Hill." Tra di
tion says : After the battle of Rocky
'-fount, a wounded drummer retreat
ed to this hill, and boat his drum in
order to summon some of his com
rades to his assistance, but the
deserved assistance never came, and
be died of his wounds. The super
stitious say he still plys his vocation.
This sound, which does resemble the i
sound of a drum, is caused by the
waters of the river running off a
ledge of rocks of peculiar form.
We have a gourd, about the sizO
of a lien's egg, raised when South
Carolina wa3 a British colony, in the
reign of George IV., and is now
about one hundred and ton years
old. We have also a stick cut by
lev. Samuel McCrary in the boy
days of the republic, with a well
defined figuro of a man-the natu
ral growth of the wood. We have a
rock upon which his satanic majesty
has left his foot-print. This rocks
is near the residence of Mr. Win.
Nichols. GUNTErm.
