AN INCIDENT IN THE CAREER OF
JOHRPIK EMMET.
Ue uses Money and Lager, and finally
Accomplishes his Purpose.
In convorsation with the reporter
of the San Francisco Chronicle, the
other day, Mr. Joseph Emmet, the
actor, described his difficulty in
securing the costume he wears
while playing "Fritz," the German
emigrant:
"It was in Buffalo, Now York,"
said Mr. Emmot, that I succeeded
in getting so excellent a dress for
'Fritz.' Up to the day I was to
play the part for the first time I had
nothing suitable to wear in the
character. I rehearsed for the last
time and felt annoyed at the
deficiency. But I trusted Provi
denco and started once more for the
railway station where the emigrant
train was nxpectod-a place I had
been visiting previously for some
time. When thero five minutes, I
heard the whistle. In came the
train and off jumpod the emigrants
-one, two, threc-and none had
clothes to suit mc. But No. 4 wore
a uniql. costume of the fatherland,
just the thing I wanted. I ap-I
proachod him and addressed him in
the best German I could commind.
He knew too much Dutch for me.
and when I got out of words Ie
simply looked lzzled. I tried
English, and he looked worried. I
took hold of his coat and pointed
at his boots to show that they were
the things I was ifter. This settled
it. He thought I was a roguo or
an emigrant runner, and tried to
edge out of the depot and get away
from mc. I took his arm and in..
vited him to have a glass of lager.
'Nein! nein !" and he rushed from me
as if I was a robber. I war, not to
be so dofeated. I wanted his
clothes and must have them.
"I rushed into an adjacent lager
beer saloon and called to the bar
keeper:
"'Here, Peter, come here quick!'
" 'Vy, vots the matter, you? You
looks oxcited.'
"'Do't stop there. Come here,
or it will be too late.'
"'My Gott, man, you looks
frightened of yourself. Vos a house
on fire?'"
"'Do you see that emigrant two
squares up going into that beer
saloon ?'
'YahI I saw him.'
"'Run after him and get that
suit of clothes ho has on. I must
have them, or I can't play Fritz
to.-night.'
"'Vell, I got you anodder one.'
" 'I shall make a failure in any
other dress but the one he has on.
Go and got it at any 'prico. One
hundred, two hundred dollars. I
must have it.'
"'Yell, vait ; I gote my hat.'
"'Never mind your hat. You
will lose the fellow. I'll lend you
mine.'
"So Peter rushed up the street at
full run, without his hat, and en
tered the saloon. He stayed a
good while. I became anxious, and
leaving the beer shop to take care
of itself, I rushed after him. Going
into the p)lace I found the emigrant
surrounded by half a dozen Ameri
can G.ermans, who were reasoning
with him. According to Peter's
account, he wouldn't sold 'enm be
cause ho wanted them to hang up
in his house in memory of Deutsch
land. Money couldn't induce him.
1 ordered a keg of beer, and the
Germans p)ut themselves outside of
it and became very happy. I re
newed the offer and finally got them
for thirty dollars."
A DIsausTiNo E~'xIIBITION ENDED.
-The great "International Con
gross of Beauty and Culture" which
had been in progress for twvo weeks
in New York, adjourned some days
ago. The Now York Times says
from the first it was a revolting,
dismal attempt to create a sensa
tion, and the sixty womnen on exhibi
tion weore representatives of the
most unculturod class. The manat
ger of the affair was the same per
son who was responsible for the
late baby show in Now York.
When the show was ended, and
instead of getting prizes they were
handed a certifleato each for $5, to
be paid in a week, there was great|in~
dignation among the women. Out
side the building the girls gathered
in groups and warmly denounced
the manager and his associates.
Several of them complained that
the,y had lest their hats and cloaks,
which bhad been stolen by their
compamions.
The Swedish government have
decided to guard their department
at the Paris Exhibition with a corn-.
pany of picked Infantry soldiers.
Probably the Swedes fear an attack
of the umbrella, narasol and cane

RIPENS.
There is a curious story about some native
wines which are extensively advertised nowa
days, and have only recently been put upon
the market. Dr. Underhill, the well-known
grape-grower of Croton Point, died in 187r.
Some of his heirs entertained temperance
views of such extreme kind, that they were
unwilling to allow the stock of wines then on
hand to be sold or any more to be made.
The grapes have sometimes been sent to
market, and sometimes left to decay upon
the vines. It is only now that the other heirs
have succeeded in arranging for a settlement
of the estate and the sale of the wines on
hand. Among these is a wine of the vintage
of 1864, described as a "Sweet Union Port,"
but suggesting the Imperial Tokay more
than any other European wine, and being
wholly unlike any other wine of American
growth. Its purity, age and mellowness are
remarkable, and both physicians and wine
fanciers have a special interest in it as the
oldest native wine now accessible in any con
siderable quantity. The whole stock is in the
hands of the well-known wholesale grocery
