Berlin was a blaze of splendor k the 18th of February, on the Iasion of the double wedding of o grand..daughters of Emperor 'illiam to the Dukes of Saxe-, einingen and of Oldenburg. At e wedding the traditional dance the ministers with flambeaus ok place, Prince Bismarck lead, g the dance. In thu procession und the floor, the hereditary rince of Meiningen, leading the rincoss Charlotte, precoded the )reditary Grand Duke of Olden irg and the Princess Elizabeth. here is a little story about this 1ecedure. Oldenburg in the hier chy of German sovereignties ,nks Saxe-Meiqingen, bit the Idenburg Princo only niarries the iughter of the future Emperor's 'otber, while the Moiningen Prince arries the daughter of the future rmperor. Of course a very nice .tle question of precedence arose hich might have been the acorn r an oak of trouble ; but the signing Grand Juko Peter of idenburg, being 9 sensible muan, )posed to scenes, told his son to ve way without a word. This tughter of the Crown Prince is iown to the German world as "dio eke Charlotte," the fat Charlotto, i affectionate nickname, never eant irreverently, given to her in ildhood when the Princess ro nibled the traditional type of erman madchen. She is the eatest favorite with the Eiperor nong his grandchildren. grand eces and nephews, and many an )ur has the little Princess taken e Imperial Secretary's work and ad the reports, which the hand Mie old monarch was obliged to !ar, for her voice is most exceed g sweet-"an excellent thing in Dman"-and she reads well and mpathetically. She is a domestic otherly looking little wonan, inply dressed, with a pleasing but >t beautifil face, frank, winsome res, from above which her light own hair is brushed smoothly tok and wound into a knot. She oedbles her ie'ther in general mtouir, aInd through her grand other Victoria while from her ther she inherits much of his tractive, open mannor, neither if nor over free. As she walked side her awcepted husband she anced shyly and ftrtively at the aring crowd, and bowed graceful and unaffectedly in answer to httations which greeted her. She olgs older than her age, whith is hteen. Her full name is Victo Elizabeth Auguste, Charlotte, Ad she was born in Potidam, July Lth, 1860. iron-HEELED Suows.-Dr. Car lly says: "In descending stairs deep declivities 'while wearing gh- heeled shoes, which throw ke weight of the body upon the onlt part of the foot, the extra Fort made for the purpose of re .ining the body within the centre gravity produces a direct strain pon these tendons, causing rupture stretching of the annular ligas eht sufficient to allow them to be s laced. It is no wvonder, then, ia fashionable women waddle in a ost thigricoful manner whou they tempt to Wvalk. They destroy ieir comfort to follow a ridiculous shin, and Acquire an ambling ud undignified movement. People > things tQ follow -fashion that te1r good sense would cause them be astamed of under any other rOumstances. Ladies wearing ich shoes are often obliged for fety, to go down stairs backwvard ; id they ,can be seen every day sendiiig the steps of our shionduble residendes in this 'man-~ ir, inaking pretence of talkirg to me i:paginary person in the front or as an excuse to hide their i'kward movements." Constantinoplo under Turkish rule becamoe the contro of a vast system of plunder and conquest. The city was enriched by the spoils of En. rope and Asia. A large multitudo gathered there. But its legitimato commerce has never been large. The race which held this golden key of the world's commerceo has never been ablo to open the store house. They were like barbarians in possession of a complicated ma chine. Tio sultans havo simply wrung their wealth from the pluni dored peasantry, and lived genera tion after generation in their rich palaces oil the Bosphorus. No build ingr, no work of art, no ma chino or invention, mo far as we are aware, has ever bon discovered or constructed in Constantinople by a Tirk. Tho Greek has done all. The race has basked ill the rich sunlight of that delicious climate, and has cnjoyed all the luxuries and beauticq of the Golden Horn for more than four centuries, has seen the current of the world's history flow by, and has never contribute'd a single blessing or favor to mian kind. Outside of the capital, its dominion has been to Christians a CuirSO and a burden ; inside, it has permitted all things to remain as they were. As a free city, it might, like Venice of old, or HaC;mburg in later tiies, be the centre of a world's commerco. The Greek has an aptitude for trade, and, no doubt, the merchants of all coun tries would gather there. The burdens that have hitherto rested on all production and industry in the Turkish empiro would then be removed, and we might see a new contre of civilization where Slavic barbarism has reigned so long. But this will not be till the empire of the raco of Osiwin has come to its end, and that must be yet in a future, not remote, bnt not iu mediate.--New York 'mcs. TiE PENMr'IATINO WINDS incident to this season of the year are b ,severo ordeal for the lungs. The neglect of a hard cough generally leads to a weakness of the luMigs, which, not infrequently, results in Consunpf-ion. ScuENca's PULMoro Svwur 'will at once relieve and loosen a tight cough and is such an agecablo remedy that children will take it without being coaxed. A cold on the lungs, if consumption is not already develo)ed, may bo easily mastered by the use of the Pulmonic Syrup, together with Schenck's Mandrake Pills to clear the system of the accumulated mucus. In more serious cases, where the diseaso has becomo dooply seated, and the patient suffers from loss of appetite, wecakness and emaciation, Schenck's Sea Weed Tonic should be used in connection with the abovo mentioned remedies, to stimu late the appotito and bring the digestivo powors into healthy action thereby sustaining the strength of the p)atienlt and enabling hmim to* resist the progress of the diseaso until the Paulmonio Syrup may p3er.. form its healing and cleansing work. The use of these standard roeme dies according to the directions. which accompany thoem, cannot fail tol'p~roduco most satisfactory ro sults. A letter adidrossodl to. Dr. Sohnock Corner of Sixth and Arch Sts., Philadelphia, asking advice', will promptly receive the Doctor's personal attention, free of charge. Schenck's Medicines are for sale by all Druggists.
