Call early, as he will be absent two weeks from the 20th of February. * A CORREcTION.-In our report of the proce'edings of the Legislature, wvhich appeared in Saturday's issue, we made the iistake of stating that the House had passed over the governor's veto tihe act known as the "chain-gang bill." As a matter' of fact, the veto was pronmptly and handsomely sustained. The Charleston Ne Tws and Cou1rier states the objections to the bill as follows:. The objections to the bill are that as to pel'sons already convicted and under sentence, it is ex post facto in character, and thait "any able..bodied male prisoner flow confined" in any jail, "except under sentence of death," could be turned over by any trial justice to the county commissioners or mayor to work in a chain gang, on the public roads, for the term of his sentence, We presume that a prosecuting wit~ ness, confined for inability, to give bond for his appearance, might be put in a chain~gang. So also could a person guilty of simple assault. These are objections of detail, and we hope that it may be practicable to frame a bill that will, in some way, compel persons convicted of infamous crimes to defray, by their labor, the cost of their food and clothing, The people cannot afford to bear the whole expense of con ~nl8 ahd feeding tlie thousandp of ~th ~ves and rascals iti a9tit THITi OLD SLA:IT. A Pl-man:n Gat Iari at Chestor--Ad dreb6 by '7ereral Ilgatton-Preparing for a Regimontal Ro-union. The Chester .Reporter of last week contains a full accouit of the Im"t, ing of the Associationl Of survivors of Companies A, F and I of the old Sixth Regiment. After the transaction of somo routine business, the president, Capt. Win. McAlilloy, introduced to the Association Gen. Jno. Bratton, who spoke as follows: OLD CoMRADEs: I need not tell you that I profoundly appreciate this reception. I came here to-day, to givo my mito of aid towards forming an organization of the survivors of the old Sixth Regiment. I am happy to see that you have already formed such an or ganiza- 1 tion, so far as Chester is concerned. I I am glad to meet here so many of t those who felt the elbow touch. j The tie which links together mem- i bers of any organization, even under ordinary circumstances, is one of peculiar force and strength ; but to us who have felt it in scenes of carnage, suffering and death, it is indissoluble. It reaches to those who now "rest under the shade of the trees on the other side of the river." Among those who rest there, none has a more glorious list than the "Old Sixth." But it is not so much for its gallant (lead that the old regiment has so bright a record ; it is rather for what she accomplished-always coming up to I the mark of her duty, whether in camp or in battle; for there is as much heroism in preparing for battle as in meeting its shock. Three times this regiment was called to the front, and three times it proved itself the banner regiment of the Army of Northern Virginia. But I am not here to day to talk of the enduranco and deeds of daring of this grand old regiment. I came to assist in collecting and preserving the materials for its history. On this history, carefully and impartially made up, I am willing to rest the reputation of the regiment. Our duty to our solves, to truth, to the cause for which we fought, and lastly, our sacred duty to our fallen comrades, demands that we preser've a faithful record of the sufferings and achieve monts of dhe regiment. . Such a record would exhibit as true patriotism as over illustrated the history of the world. By tho rsel judgment of mankind, is the test of merit. TI r i of arms is no Oxception. ;Li am1 ju.l-mnent success i necessary to test the merit of the cause. We failed. Our dead have no country. Con temrpt and aspersion will be heaped uplonl themf. Their best vindication, their most, worthy anti lasting monument, is to be found in a wvell sustained organization of the sur. v'ivors of the vanquished cause.I Hence I urge a speedy and thorough comp1)1etion of this organization. Goneral Brcatton 's address was well received and frequently ap ph uded. The committee on statistic s sub. mitted a report, after which an opportunit.y was given for those who desired, to become members of the Association. Quite a number came forward and were enrolled. Liout. C. W. McFadden offered the followving resolution : 1?esolved, That the executive committee and the corresponding secretary of this Association cor resp~ond wvith the officers of the other conmpanies of the Sixth Regiment, inviting them to unite wvith us in forming a re-union of survivors of the regiment at the annual meetings of this Association at Chester on the first Thursday in August. Lieut. J. C. McFadden offered the following: .Rcsolved, ,further, That this com mittee report to an adjourned meeting of this Association their success, if any, and that a committee of arrangements be appointed to perfect preparations for the Regi xMontal re-union in August next, These resolutions were unani.. mously adopted. The Association then adjourned, to meet again at Chester on the first Thursday in May next. SHERIFF'S SALE.
