. IT rs sAID THAT candidates in tho
ensuing campaign will be as thick
as the leaves in Vallambrosa, or as
down on a duck's back. Let's got
ready, thon, and fix things so that
they can all have a f "ir, square race
for the nomination. Abbevillo and
Anderson are already in line. Our
County executive Coimitteo 1mst
prepare a scheme to bo presmited
to the dill'orcnt Clubs for ratiflica
tion.
THE oom) MN, otherwise known
as the Imono-motalists, ale mCh
alarmed over the prospect of the
remonetization of silver, and are
appealing earnestly to Hayes to
interposo his veto. I1anwhilo
they are beginning to confess that
through the limited capacity of the
mint to coin silver, the immediate
consoquonces of the romonotization
of the silver dollar. even the ninety
two cent "dollar of our daddies"
will not bo disastrous.
TiE RuHSIANHS are report0d to be
within twenty-four hours marcl of
Constantinople ; and nothing,
defirito can be heard about peace.
England is in a state of formeiit,
and her leaders are divided (an the
question of war or peaco. Disrauel;
and tho iinist'ry are belligerent.
Gladstono and iny Liberals a,rc
for peace. Austria and Italy arc
also becoming restive, at the pos
siblo absorption of Turkey by
Russia. Things are badly mixed,
but nobody seems to be spoiling for
a ight except the Gvecks, who have
been all this time getting ready to
help Russia, and aro now afraid
they are going to be too latc.
WE ITAVE SEVERA, TIMEs urged
upon the Legislauro tho repeal of
the existing olection law, providin)g
that the names of all candidates for
national, State and county oflices
shall be printed on tho same hallot
and deposited in the samo box.
This was a Radical scheme, devised
solely for the purposo of.permitting
the Federal govermnent to bull
doze the people. State nd Federal
affairs should be kept (nltirely dis
tinct ; and as the time of holding
the elections is the sanme, tl.e
ballots should at least be kept
distinct. A constitutional amend.
mont should also be submitted
changing tlio time of the State
cloctions to the month of October.
The 5emoeiation Fraud.
It is claimed that tIle surrepti
tious drop)ping of the silver (lollar
out of the coinage aet of 1873 was
not a fraud, because for many years
p)revious tho "standard coin" had
been out of circulation, owving to
its excessive value as compared
with tihe gold dollar. This is a
very flimsy argument, for in the
first place there imust have been
some period between 1873 and the
*present, at. which gol and silvor
dollars would have been of equal
value, and when, in consequence,
silver would hlave four 1 it~s way to
the mint, and tihe silver dollar
would hav ie reap)pearedl.
Again, every citizen .has a right
to vote. In case any one refrains
from exercising that privilege, hns
Congress a righlt to disfranachiso
him ? So, every citizen ou ce en
joyed by law the privilege of
coining a silver dlollar. This was
a privilege, wvhether it was exercised
or not ; and when Congress clhang
ed the law it abrogated a vested
right, regalrdloss of the quesiion
whether the right hadl been ox-;
ercised or not. If an indi..idual
fails to proscute an assailant for
assault and battery. is thlat a good
grou~nd for the repeal of the law
granting him this righIt? And yet
this, is prooisely the chain of reason
ing pur;;ned by seome who deniy
thlat demoneuizaionu was a fraud.
Lastly, it is absiurd to say that
silver, if remDonetized, will remain at
nitiety-two cents 'on the dollar. . t
is be9pJ - to appreciate. Let us
cornpromise on the trade dollar of
