EXTREME1s MEET.-A member of
the House of Representatives has
offered a bill reducing the salary of
circuit judges to two thousand
dollars per annum. If the bill
becomes a law, pettifoggers will
-wear the ermine. No jurist of any
eminence Will have the position,
even if thrust upon him. In our
opinion the salary should be in
creased to five thousand. R. 0. X.
REMOVAL.--Mrs. Simmons, the
aecomphpshed teacher, who his been
sojourning in Ridgeway for two
years, has accepted an invitation
from Captain Stack to move to his
neighborhood, a good school for
ten, or even twelve, months being
guaranteed, and a handsome stipend
paid monthly, with dwelling and
school- rooinfree. Mrs. Simmons
carries with her the regrets and
the best wishes of the entire com
munity of Ridgeway.

illustrate the meaning of more

far better than they can be defined

RocKY MOUNT ITEus.-The solid
men here are conservatives and old
fogies. No Democratic clubs,
granges or farmers' clubs.--The
matrons are pious, chaste and good

-The young men chase foxes,
(lance and "fly around" generally
no debating societies-not inclined
to matrimony--a spinater says "too
lazy."-The maidens are intelli..
gent, beautiful and aset-mnat ri
monially inclined-.parties-after
noon rides, &c. Harry up, boys.
-Labor is cheaper than at any
time sihco "freedom." Some give
part of the crop, others "standing
wages."-Hard times. No lien
law-glad of it. Expect to be
pinched with want. Endure and
get straight, or look for the sheriff
-The Temple of Janus, Justice
Scott's office, is closed until the

one hundred acres of land near
:Ridgeway, the property of a white
person who died intestate and
without heirs, was eacheated to the
State, and was ordered by the
Radical Legislature to be sold and
the proceeds expended in building
a sohool-house for colored children.
It was done ; that is, a portion of ;
the proceeds was. used for that I
purnase 'Aft4rwads the same
Legislature passed a law placing the
building in the hands of the school
brustees for free school purposes,
ind now, as ever since the erection,
the negroes have a good school
house, JVhilO the white people either
have to rent a vchool--house, or
remain everlastingly toithout / Now
we rise to object to the escheating
of the land of a white person to the
purpose of building school-houses
for negroes-while our own little
Confederates are out in the cold.
The State should provide (according
to Judge Mackey) for both her
twins-the white as well as the
colored, without fear, favor or

THE SIXTH CIRCUIT.

of the 26th imh,ii. you mention
the names of ce,hinl gentlemen
as fit and proper persons to fill the
vacancy now existing in the judge
ship of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.
Those who appreciate a pure judi
ciary, and treasure the memory of
the judges of the olden times, earn
estly hope that tho spirit of your
remarks may strike a responsive
chord in the breasts of our Demon
cratic legislators. No reform in
South Carolina can be complete
that passes over the judiciary, and
there is no department of our
government that stands so much in
need of purification as the judi
ciary. It would seem almost a crime
against civilization itself to place
the judicial ermine upon the should
ers of a man who was notoriously
corrupt and unscrupulous. Are the
rights of persoeis and property safe
and secure in the hands of a judge
in whose personal integrity neither
bar nor'people have any confidenco
whatever ? Does it not offend
against the genius of our free insti
tutions to entrust the * administra.
tion of justice to a man whose only
qualification for so exalted a station
is the facility with which the judicial
functions are p.orverted I Too
m-iy of our people are prone to
allow considerations of expediency
and "policy". to influeDee them in
determining grave issues. The
Legislature has a serious work
before it in the selection of circuit
judges, a work that will affect the
future of the whole State, and it
behooves the members to act cau
tiously, and with all the- wisdom
they are capable of exercising. The
fate of posterity is involved, and it
will be jeopardized by hasty and
imprudent action. A pure judiciary
wais once the brightest jewvel in
South Carolina's crown ; and there
was a time in the history of our
State when to sit upon the Bench
was to enjoy the proudest distinc
tion that could be conferred upon
any citizen. Thei'e was once a time
too when so high an honor was
awarded only to those members of
the Bar who were conspicuous for
purity and integrity of character.
May we not hope that the Legisla
ture now sitting in Columbia, to
whom the people look to efface
every stain left by Reconstruction,
will revive a custom that added so
much in the days of our prosperity
to the glory andl renown of the
