The Borger Family Troupe, pursu ant to previous announcement, gave an entertainment at the Thespian Hall on Saturday night. The an dience was a large one, the hall being crowded. The performance was in every particular a very fine one, and several of the performners were loudly encored. We cannot give particulars, but must content ourselves with saying that it was in all respects a fine entertainment. We trust this troupe will soon visit us again. ILLUSTRATION 13Y IIcTUREs.-One of the great contrasts between the School books used by the fathers and mothers of the land, when young, and those now used by the children, is the use of pittures. As a curious instance of ilhistrating the meaning of words by p'ctures, look at the three picturcs of a Ship on page 1751 of Webster's Una bridged Dictionary,-thesc alone illustrate the meaning of more than one hundred words and terms far better than they can be defined by any description in words. * THE "STAR SER iVICE." How to Secure Incrnased Mail Facili ties in Fairfield. Col. D. Wyatt Aiken, in a letter to a citizen of this place, concludes with the following very useful suggestions to our people concerning increased mail facilities. He says: Let me call your attention to a matter of interest to your p)eople. In November last, $500,000 wvere appropriated to extend tihe "Star Service," which means the carrying of mails on horseback, once, twice, and thrice a week. Nowv, I am sure the mail facilities of South Carolina need increasing in every county in the State. Howv aro~ the people of Jackson's Creek, Buck. Head, Rocky Mount, Pea Ridge, Long Town, Horeb, &c., &c. off for mails ? Do they have to go all the way to Winnsboro ? Or do they have weekly horse mails ? Of thle latter, they can, without legislation, be in creased to semi-weekly mails ; if semni-weekly, they can be increased to tri-weekly, if full petitions are signed and forwvar dcd to vonr repro sentaitive, Colonel Evins, The De partment cannot make a now route, or establish any mail line unless by special law, but where a route exists, they can change tile schedlule or in crease the service without legisla tion, and it was for these purposes that Congress appropriated that *500,000 in November last. I only throw out these hints that our ig - norant, backwvard people may be induced to thinkc of and demand their rights. The New England States average 4} mails per week through the Star Service. South Carolina averages barely 1}- por1 week. "That's the wvay our money goes," &o. Yours very truly, D. WYATT AIKEN. SOUTh O AR OLINA NE WVS.
