Nobody know this better than Grant himself ; and he know it so well that within forty-eight hours of his retiroment from office he gave formal notice to Plaonkrd and Chamberlain that the maintenance of sham governments by bayonet power had become ol'onsive to the moral sonse of the whole country, and that orders had been issued for the withdrawal of the military sup port from the protenders. If, under these circumstances and with this knowledge, any Republicans in Congress sought to bind Mr. Hayes by pledges to ddfy public opinion, undo the orders that Grant had issued, perpotuate carpet baggery, and repudiate the contracts made by Stanley Matthews and Fostor, they simply asked him to make himself utterly infamous by a breach of faith without a parallel in its atrocity.-'hicago ' ines. A SoIENTIST's THEORY OF THE WEATHEn.-A New Orloans gentle man, who recently arrived in this city after extensive travels in South America for scientific purposes, accounts for the remarkable weather of the past few months on the score of voloanio action. He said that the volcanoes of the western ranges of mountains, more particularly the Cordilleras, havo been very active during the last year. The rivers having their soureo in that locality have b eon perceptibly affected by such disturbanoes. It has been a noticeable fact that the waters of the Amazon and the Rio del Platte, and their tributaries, have been greatly increased in temperature. He holds that these waters, after being. disoharged into the ocean on the eastern coast, have affected the G ulf Strean, which, as is known, has been largely increased in volume, and that in the influence of the Gulf stream on the elimate will be found the true cause of the unusual moderation which has been so sur prising this wintor.--New York Sta,'. A HIUoE STICK.-The Gold Hill (Nov,) News- says : "Probably the largest stick of timber over brought to .the Comstock was recently re eeived at the new Yellow Jacket - works, east of the second railroad * tunnel. It is to be used as a chord for the pump-bob, and its dimen-. sions are thi'ty-oight by forty-eight mnches, by forty three foot in length. The wveight is 21,000 pounds, and the freight from San Francisco amounted to $410.70. Two cars were required ta transport this stick, and it oost twenty dollars to load it. The timber came from Oregon, and cost over $200 de livered in S'an Franeisco.. Good, heavy material is being put into tho machinery at the now works of the Yellow Jaoket Mining Company, N and it will stand the strain for years to come." General Oharles E. Furlong, who commanded a Federal brigade during the war, and who now represents the city of Vicksburg in II the Senate of Mississippi, has been appointed by the Lee Monument Association of lRichmond, Va., its general representative for the State of Mississippi for the collee tion of funds towards the erection of an equestrian statue of the late Gen.. Robert E. Lee, on the capitol grounds at Richmond. The, expression, "so-long," used sometimes in the sense of good-bye in the Southern States, wvas bor rowed from negroes. It is a cor.. ruption of the Turkish word "salaaro," which, with the spread of Mohammnedanism, traveled to the west coast of Africa, whence slave cargoes were procured.
