lB8sse8. A'ditors :-Tho signi
ficanco of my nom (e puon
(should entitle mo to your for
bearanco if not venorativn, at least
to the extent of a few jottings
of the Christmas Fostival given by
the ladies of Ridgeway and vicinity
for the benefit of that stalwart corps,
the "Moise Ligbt Artillery." For
nooks this matter has been agitated,
talked of, and noised abroad, and
we all began11 to beliovo that strainIg
sights would be witnessed, and that
mighty events would occur. C-mn
mittoes of ladies wero appointed, as
sisted by a detail from the Battery,
and they all went to work, with the
i determination to make it a success,
and you know, Moss & Editors,
I nothing can be more tonehing than
to behold iof t and tender females
who have been all weakness and
dependence, and alivo to every
trivial roughness while treading the
usual pa-ths of life, suddenly using
a n unshrinking firmness and energy
and mnastering those difficulties
which often break down the spirits
of men. Through the efforts of the
committees the town amid country
was thoroughly stirred, as i, has
never been since the clarion voice
of Hampton aroused it from its
long slumber of lethargy. The
people realized for the time thehigh
duty they owed to tho old State and
its citizen soldiery. The pro,
gramme as arranged was for a
Christmas tree in connection with
a hot suppor. To meet this ar
rangement, and in the absence of a
more suitable building, the Masonic
Hall sore-room had boon tastefully
decorated, and a graceful codar
reared to mot the requirements of
our annual visitant from the frozen
regions of the north polo, at the
same time the adjoining store room
was being fitted up for the purpose
of serving the inner man with the
essentials of life. Everything being
arranged, the dawning of Christmas
day was looked for with many mis,
givings for the success of our do
termined managers, for with their
other difficulties they now had rain,
mud and slop to contend with. The
old adage, "they that determine
half succeed" was fully verified, for
they mot the issue squrelv and
fearlessly, and determined to go
ahead as though the "oriental god
of day" wvas poeformning his usual
daily duty, in un clouded splendor.
At six and a half o'clock tile doors of
tihe tree room wore thrown Open,
and tile efficient dloor .keeper wvas
soon1 besiegedi by an anxionls crowd
of enger and bxpectanit signt seers.
'"They, jostling, crowd in one wild rush.'
There, bonding under' the weight of
its varied and innnamorablo gifts,
and glittoring from top) to b)ottom
withl its mamny..colored tapers, stood
the artistically arranged tree. This
was a sight to both old and young
well wvorth tile trilling cost to see.
Thle numbers were soon1 called
whlich created much excitemen tand
amnusemnent-for a young lady to1
get a bunch of cigars or for a bashful
young gent to be p)rosented with a
tastily dressed doll. Among tile
gifts I noticed some valuable ones,
and my attenth,n was particularly
arrested by a beautifully executed
lamp-shade, made by Miss
H. K., a young lady of the neigh
borhood, and made a special present
to the ci.p ain. The distribution
over, the tree, shorn of its glory, was
thrown out to make room for other
amusements. Supper being next
announced, lot me follow the nowv
hungry audience into thle supper
room. Here we find an amplo sups
ply of all kinds of eatables too nu
merous to specify. It is enough to
say that overy tiling any one could
call for wvas there and inl abundance
The young ladies were acivo iand
obliging in serving the tables, and I
hink those young men who ato two
or threo times should be excused, as
'twas hard to refuse when waited on
by so much grace and loveliness.
Supper over, tho young folks rei
turned to the next room to enjoy
the pleasures of the giddy dance,
while the suppor managers disposed
of as many of the remnants as possiN
blo. Some of the cakes would have
equalled in quality and beauty of
design McKenzio's artistic skill.
One of those, with the words in
icing, "Moise Light Artillery," was
purclased by the officers of the
battery, and forwarded to Ganoral
Moiso with their complimonts.
Taking overything into considora..
tion, I pronounco the whole affair a
grand success. The handsome sum
of $90.00 Was realized, with a total
expenso of not moro than $10.00.
Had the weather been good, I have
no doubt the proceeds would have
reached $150.00
T,>o in.i praiso cannot be be
stowed upon the managers, both
ladies and gentlemen, for the activi
ty and unflagging energy they dis
played in pushing this entertainment
to such a succesful termination.
Whoro all did so well I will refrain
from singling out individuals. I
will merely say that the citizens of
Ridgeway and vicinity are alivo to
to its in torost, and intend, whenever
the command "action" is given, to
soo that their battery has their in..
divid' support.

THE 1PARIS EXPOSITION.
Senator Butler has written a let
ter to B. F. Crayton, Esq., of Ander
son, advising the representation of
South Carolina at the Paris Con,.
tennial. He suggests that the fol
lowing specimens be sent :
A small bale of our low country
moss, with a brief description of the
manner of its use in making horse
collars, mattresses, &c. ; specimens
of our phosphate and kaolin do
posits ; different kinds of wood for
building, manufacture of vehicles,
&c., &c. ; iron, copper, gold and
manganese; different kinds of pot.
tory clay, with a brief description of
the mannor of its manufacture in
vessels, with a sample of the
vessels; specimens of our soap--stone
deposits, lime-stono deposits, clay
for making brick, and a "specitnen
brick;" granite and whet rock; bale
or bales of our cotton; bale or bales
of our different kinds of grasses;
samples of our rice, and of every
variety of our cereals and products
which are not perishable; peanuts,
cotton seed, with the oil made frorn
them, with description of the mode
of expressing the oil ; speimens of
our flora and fauna ; specimens of
our horticultural p)roducts, fruits,
&c.; specimens of our manufactured
goods of every kind and dlescription.
fIn fact, we should have on exhi
bition -specimens and samples of
everything in the State wvhich will
iorm the world uf our resources.
If drawings could be mado, without
too much exp)ense, of the water pow
ers on our streams, and of our
manufacturing establishments, with
the location, latitude, climate, acces
sibility by railroad or water tranis
portaLtion it would be very desirable..
LIBERIA N ExoDus.-Yostorday there,
were some seventy-fivo negro wamon,.
b 3aring children in their arms and
small ones following them around in
this city, with the intention of leav
ing for Liberia to-day. They had
boon duped into the idea that theogreat.
steamnship) was to leave to-day, sold.
out all their chattles in their coun
try homes, and came here with the.
requisite greonbacks for Liberia.
On Rutledge Avenue they presented.
a fearful sight. Melancholy, sore and
disappointed, they sought the race.
course to lodge for last night, and
see Emancipation to-day, hear exo
dus speeches, and try to live on until
the ship arrives.-Journal of Con
merce, 1st inst.
It is stated as a curious factr that
the recent relapse of Senator ?at
torson into a condition of danger-.
ens nervous prostration was caused
by t he sudden and' violent"ringing
of the door-bell by a bel ated ser-.
vant, His ner'vousness mus~*
been fearful, that so trivial
currence could have affected i~
seriously.
