IERALD.
The county was visited on Sat
urday with one of the heaviest rains
of the winter. Considerablo damago
resulted to fentcing along tho water
courses.
The delinquent tax sales caine
off on Monday under order of the
comnp troller-gen oral. Fourteen
tracts of land were put up, of which
four wore forfe)ted to the Stato.
TowN IMPRoVEMENTS.--WO are
pleased to note the improvements
being made by the Town Council.
The cistern at the corner of Wash
ington and Zion streets is rapidly ap
proaching completion, and when
finished will furnish an amplo sup
ply of water in case of fire. The
cistern is well constructed, and will
last well. We also observe that the
Council has recently put hands to
work in clearing away the erossings
on Congress street. These cross
ings are always very muddy, ahnost
impassablo, after a rain, and they
should be kept always clear. The
work now being done on the
crossings under the direction of the
Council will put them all in fine
condition. We would call tie at
tention of the Council to the large
puddle of murky, stagnant water in
front of Mr. Boag's lot at the corner
of Liberty and Congress streets.
This place should be so drained or
filled up as to keop it free from the
foul and stagnant water that
is now constantly there.

It is now an acknowledged fact that
CONaUMPTrON cAN 1)E CURED. It' has
been cured in a very great number
of cases (some of thmem appareontly
desperate ones) by Schmenck's Pul,.
mionic Syrup alone, and in others
by the same medicine in connection
with Soenck's Sea Weed Tonic and
Mandrake Pills, one or both accord
ing to the reqnirements of the case.
The old supposition that "Cons
sumption is incurable,"' for many
years deterred Physicians from at
tempting to find a remedy for that
disease, and patients afflicted with
it reconciled themselves to death
without an effort being made to save
them from a doom which wvas con
sidered inevitable.
Dr. Schenek himself was supposed
at one time to be at the very gate of
death, his physicians having pro
nounced his .case hopeless and
abandoned him to his fate : lie was
cUnaD by the nforesaid medicines,
and afterward enjoyed uninterrupt
od good health for~ more than forty
years. Thousands of people have used
Dr. Sehenck's preparations with the
satne remarkable success.

InGEwAY, Decomber 29.-A few
items, in this article, will close the
dottings from Ridgeway and its
neighborhood for tho year '77.
The delightful weatlier, just pro
ceding Christmas, was followed
with constant soaking rains that
filled our stroots with slush very
much liko the slush you have in the
Boro during a wet spell. But,
nevorthcloss, the "Hot Supper"
given by the ladies to aid the
Mloiso Light Artillery, of our town,
was quito a success. Everybody
was pleased and satisied, the
young folks had a fine time in
dancing, and the ladies realized a
handsoime sum. It is said we are
to have a large grist and flour mill
established in our town in the near
futuro. The acreage put down in
small grain is larger than in former
years. Although the farmers wore
late in getting it in, the favorable,
weather has germinated the seed,
and as a general thing has secured
good stands.
Cotton is not all gathered, as the
backwardness of the crops has
prevented the late bolls from open
ing. The crop, as a general thiing,
is short, and consequently the
spirits of the farmers are low-flat
-blue.
Our merchants have paid for
cotton a highur price than the
Charleston prices, with the extor
tionate rates of railroad freights,
warranted-seldon leaving an iota
of margin for profit.
ML%r. Hal Edimunds, of the firm of
R. S. Desp,rtes & G.., has a p.atont
dated Dce. 4, 1877, for "The Gauge
for Tobacconists." This is an
ingenious contrivance to enablo the
sellers of tobacco to out off a five
cent, ten-cont, fiftoon-cont, &c.,
piece of the propjer longth or size
from a plug of tobacco of any
price. This gauge will save more
to the tob)acco seller in a month,
thani tile price of tile gauge.
Hurrah for Ridgeway!
We are all very blue at the idea
of having to pay anothler tax in tihe
next thrvee months, out of a very
short crop, the pr1oceeds of which
are already en tirely exh/a usted.
Cannot the State borro(v onloughi
money to runl the government anI
othler year, and distribute the tax
for '77 among tile next five annual
taixes,-say a fraction over twvo
mills a year-and pledge t!.is two
mills to be added to the taxes to
b)e assessed annually for thme next
live years, to the payment of the
capital and~ interest borrowed
for this p)urposo? If something of
this kind is not done, over two-.
thirds of the land in Fairfield wvill
be sold for delinquent taxes in
1878.
Our Lodge of A. F. M. installed
Mr. T. Elllison Cloud as WV. MV., and
the other oflicers, on tile 27th inst.
Harmony prevailing, we had a
p)leasant, social time of it.
After a beautiful day yesterday
serene, bright, clear and t'emperate
-we have a blustering nlorthl-east
wind to-day, accompanied with rain,
foreboding a freeze.
,Messrs. Editors, that you, and all
in your oflice, may have a hlapp)y
New Year, is the sincere wish of the
writ;er of the items from
RooCEwAY.
